HI guys

Iv got my OH a brand new laptop as she just found the joys of facebook & keeps robbing the main PC so i cant play any games

Now i was just wondering Hence the name laptop it can be keep on a person lap being used for a long period of time, but im just wondering if its on her lap for a good 5/6 hours none stop in the evening will it actually stop the air flow getting to the parts of the laptop to keep the CPU etc cool.

Im hoping im worrying over nothing but i dont want her heating it up & burning the CPU out

I have checked her laptop a couple of times over the last few hours & & its running between 57c & 63c an thats just playing some of the games on facebook.

So will it be ok to leave her to it with them temps or will i need to have words with her lol

cheers

You could consider investing in one of those lap trays for laptops. There's a few few around, Belkin do one although I like the look of Logitech's one better because it has a proper flat surface, meaning there's more room for airflow.

Alternatively, my housemate uses one of those standard granny-style lap trays for serving meals on, with the cushioned bit on the bottom. Works really well for her, she can sit and play The Sims for hours without cooking the laptop or her lap!

they should be alright running a bit hotter than desktop cpu. i dunno if its still the case but they use to pick some of the best chips to be used as laptop chips ( used to overclock real good ! )

start worrying about it burning when the laptop is restarting itself due to too high temps

just let her use it as she wants without any 'cooling trays' and stuff like that...

modern laptops will be just fine resting on your lap, on a duvet etc etc.... they pretty hardy

i wouldn't even begin to start analizing temps on a brand new laptop.. it's just not needed.

I'd say modern laptop run pretty hot myself. It's fine if you can force the fan to turn on (as with some Dells such as mine), but if you can't they create a significant amount of heat. The laptop itself will probably turn the fans on before it gets to the point of overheating, but it doesn't mean it'd be comfortable to use on your lap.

the hotter they get the slower they get
putting it on a duvet is just plain silly
i have mine on a piece of hard board to let air get in to the vents

mr fun just make sure vents are kept clear and it will be fine

My laptops intel core 2 duo T7300 used to hit 72oc, wouldnt worry about it.

Couple of bursts of compressed air lowered it slightly.

This couldn't be further from the truth, modem laptops are more susceptible to heat damage now than ever before, the processors run much hotter these days and cooling is limited in the ever increasing demand for smaller laptops, the fins will block up sucking up lint from carptets or duvets, only use a laptop on flat sturdy surface.

only thing really in danger of overheating is the hard drive IMO.

this is true.
but the hotter the CPU gets the slower it will run(thermal throttling) until it get to the point were it will auto shutdown to stop damage
so keep the air intakes clear and clean and you wont have any problems

Thanks for everyones input,

Il just let her use it as she fits, as im less worried now about it getting to hot after reading comments on here.
