Got my degree marks today

I'm pretty sure it's easier to get a 1/2.1 there than Oxbridge etc... there's no level playing field - the system needs an overhaul, as I said in my earlier posts something like that CATS system that's currently used, so Universities ranking would play a part on how many points you accumilated, for example Hons Degree 720 points for Cambridge, 360 for Swansea +whatever for your particular degree - that would differentiate better, and would certianly help the employer.

UEA is a really good university, stop your elitist rubbish, their marking scheme will be on par with ANY "redbrick".

I went to Kingston University (not a great Uni but I had my reasons) to study Computer Science. Am soon expecting my classification which I think will be First. Despite going to Kingston, I have managed to secure a few roles straight after my exams. I honestly thought the name of the University you attended made a huge impact but it seems that it is not necessarily the case.

I got my results (well classification) on wednesday, 2.1 MEng Electronic Engineering (Computing) from University of Sheffield. We don't graduate till late next month though.

Hehe. Another Mappin Muppet :D Congratulations buddy :)
Im a graduate of 2002, but did the Bachelors course (before they changed it to purely masters).

Is Professor Houston still department head?
Dont suppose you know if Dr. Greg Cook is about still? :)

Ask for a remark, a 2:2 no matter where it is from isn't as useful as a 2:1
If you can get marked up the few points it will be very helpful to future employment opportunities.

Few employers now look at where a degree is from, its what the degree is in, and also what the grade is.

Congrats mate :) You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job in all honesty, especially with it being from Manchester.

I got my marks through a week or two ago, I got 69%, ala 2:1. 1% away from a first! I feel your pain and anger :(

What classification did you get from imperial? Also I find it funny that you missed my previous post, did you make many friends? It's a serious question because most people I know at Imperial really are loners and the social life was crap. The university is not very good at developing you as a person despite the degree you get out of it. But to be fair the lack of personality is probably why you are at a Ftse 100 company:p

dream on, Universities are already debating the classification of degrees, the system is arbitrary and unreliable and it doesn't work anymore.

hahah, right your just sprouting the usual bile about people who got to "top" universities seemingly thinking they are marked harsher...its a myth. Maybe some brand new university but not UEA who is just as old as York and Warwick.

The guy who went to UEA with AAB could with those grades have easily got in Imperial, its the course that matters not just the uni.

It's not a myth....it's harder to get the same classification at a top university than an average one. The standards are higher, the quality of lecturers is higher and the expectation is higher. mrn may be coming across badly because he went to a bad university that doesn't help with his personal skills, but it's true regarding the quality of the classification, hence HR departments will treat certain universities different.

Gurdas, this is just an observation: you sound like you have some sort of sour grapes issue with Imperial. I'm going to go out on a limb: you went to another London University, and it's what you say to yourself and your buddies to convince each other that your University is the better choice.

Either way: to suggest Imperial College, London, is a bad University, is utterly stupid.

prove it, I think you'll find the stats show on average most universities have very similar rates of people attaining a 2:2 etc with Oxbridge having a higher rate of 2:1's.

Top universities are better for research, the teaching levels are usually pretty standard in the top 50.

Oxford and Cambridge are always anomalies anyway as they are far superior to UCL, Imperial, LSE etc.

Anyway the whole prestige thing is a damn joke and does nothing for improving our education system but in fact hinders it. If you have good a levels, a 2:1, decent work experince, you will be fine and the only people who think not are those can't get over themselves becuase they went to a so called world class institution.

I got a third in Mechanical Engineering from Leeds, I got honours and that was all I was really bothered about. I had a lot of problems in my 4 years, never liked the course and some personal issues I wont go into. I dropped out about 3 months into my third year and I almost couldnt bear the thought of comin back but I did, stomached it and I put the work in, had an average about 2% off a 2.1 and a clear 2.1 on my dissertation but I also failed one module and my 2nd year average dragged it down quite a bit (think my average was like 42).

Either way though, I'm glad the work is over, I should have changed course in first year to something I actually had an interest in but I didn't. I'll miss Uni though, I already hate not being there, spent the lowest points of my life at Uni but the best times ever balanced it out and I'd trade my right leg to be starting again.

It's nothing to do with what percentage of 1st/2:1/2:2s that are given out, it's the standard needed to achieve those grades.

You are utterly deluded if you think courses in subject X are uniform throughout the Universities. There is a huge difference in the level of competency required to get a 2:1 in Mathematics from Warwick, compared to a 2:1 in Mathematics from Kingston (say). Even between top Universities, there can be considerable differences.

Right and you have been to both courses to compare them? I'm not utterly deluded, you simply can not prove your "prestige" theory. I'd rather go to Warwick for maths than Kingston but unless you've been to both how do you know?
