Got my degree marks today

Graduated two years ago now with a 2:2 in Physics from King's College London. :)
Possibly chose the wrong subject... but soldiered on and ended up with a 1st for my final year project, with my earlier marks dragging me down though. :o

I've taught students from Warwick, Oxford and Cambridge so I'm aware of the differences. I've also seen exams from these Universities, as well as others. Kingston was a random example - I've seen mathematics exam papers from umpteen different universities. One particular example I recall was a 2nd year exam from Aston University - the standard of the mathematics required was around what I would expect from an A-Level student.

I'm not conjecturing or guessing. I'm telling you, as someone who works in academia, that there are massive differences in the academic standards of courses from one University to the next.

And long may it remain so. I'd hate to see degrees dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.

They don't neccessarily have to correlate to the uni's overall rank though. Differnt courses vary, they have different strengths and weaknesses.

Even throughout my course there's three different levels of difficulty, dependant on maths ability. Each gives you various differnt modules you can do with various difficulties. If you take the easy maths route you inevitably find the degree much easier but still end up with a degree.

But theres some of my friends doing degrees at better universities in the same course as me, that have significantly less work.

Gurdas, this is just an observation: you sound like you have some sort of sour grapes issue with Imperial. I'm going to go out on a limb: you went to another London University, and it's what you say to yourself and your buddies to convince each other that your University is the better choice.

Either way: to suggest Imperial College, London, is a bad University, is utterly stupid.

No sour grapes at all!! I went to UCL and LSE:) Imperial does not have all the boxes ticked i'm afraid.

Anyway the whole prestige thing is a damn joke and does nothing for improving our education system but in fact hinders it. If you have good a levels, a 2:1, decent work experince, you will be fine and the only people who think not are those can't get over themselves becuase they went to a so called world class institution.

That's not true, some companies will only mainly look at top 5 universities, if you don't believe this then that's a shame, because it's true.

I didn't miss your pervious post. That's right I never made any friends, even my dog ran away.

M8 I didn't need to go to Univesity for THEM to develop me as a person, I can do that myself (there is life outside college!) - so YOU needed to go to Unversity so that THEY could develop your personally... that so sad. I also find it funny that you have resorted insults.

And by the way I got a 1st Class Joint Honours in Physics + Maths.

Where did you go if you apparently turned down Imperial? (didn't know they did foundation degrees :-) )What was the point in applying in the first place if you were TOO good for the place?

You said Imperial is a stange Univeristy? you didn't even go there! I think you probably got turned down!:D

Strange that, that's what most people who go to Imperial say:p University is where you get to meet amazing friends and people, i'm sorry but Imperial has a very anti-social environment, maybe due to the massive numbers of international students I don't know, but it's not great. Funny you try and put me down (foundation degree lol) without knowing what universities I attended! I went to UCL and LSE, I turned down Imperial for LSE and only applied as a backup in case I didn't get into LSE. Imperial is a strange university, the education is good but that's about it.

Also no, I didn't get turned down.

I'm fairly sure you can make life harder for yourself at any university. The important factor is how easy can you make things for yourself.

Of course there are exceptions, but as is life. When talking in generalities, which is all we can do, the better Universities have higher academic standards.

Well there's a shocker! Might want to work on making the whole London University competitive thing a little less obvious!!!

:p Thing is, it's not like I went to City or Kings (sorry daz:p) and therefore am bitter and have Irrational London Competitive Syndrome in regards to Imperial. MRN came into this thread being very knobish and yes, while we do go to the elite universities, he does well to conform to the stereotype. What makes things even more amusing is that he apparently got a 1st class, yet pretty much every single one of his posts has spelling and grammar mistakes! Imperial's standards must have taken a dip but then again he did maths so will probably say his english didn't matter!

Oh please a Business Studies student - enough said. So i'm probably right in thinking you went to UCL first? then LSE - so I'm right you DO have a chip on your shoulder for not going to one of the TOP Uni's in the country for your first degree?

Imperial don't even do a business studies course but if you are implying Imperial is easy to get into then you are just shooting yourself in the foot! I did go to UCL first, why does that translate into having a chip on my shoulder? UCL IS a top uni and has always been ranked amongst the best in the country and the world and has ranked higher than Imperial in the past!:p

edit:/ also quoting images is against the rules

To be honest, I think you're being a little pathetic.

Fair enough, but putting down peoples efforts regardless of what university they went to is just not on. Yes some universities are valued more than others but to tell people they did crap when they have been working hard for their grades?

I don't think the manner in which the subject was brought up was appropriate, but my comment was regarding your subsequent posts. Imperial college is an excellent university, with very high academic standards - regardless of whether an ex-student with a 1st class degree made some spelling and grammatical errors in some posts on a random internet forum.
