WoW or LOTR online?

WoW is the better starter MMO, most definately.

I find LOTRO's graphical style very bland in comparison to WoW, although undoubtedly LOTRO looks better aesthetically.

LOTRO is more story based, and WoW is more PVP based.

Both games have free trials, you should try both.

WoW is the best by far

hah thats a bit subbjective. Ive played wow and lotro and wow was great fun to start, the combat is really immediate and fun and the ui is massively adjustable with some really useful mods to take the pain out of the hum drum stuff - started getting a bit boring with all the gear runs you needed to do at later levels. lotro kept me interested with the story as well as a much more mature and friendly community and the visuals are some of the prettiest youll see in any mmo. Try the free trials and see which suits you.

Ignore anyone here who tells you one or the other.

Liking/disliking an MMO is so personal and subjective that there is no such thing as one being universally better than another.

Instead I fully agree with what some others have said, both have trials, the one and only way that you will know which one you like the most is to download both trials and give them a whirl.

LOTRO has a more mature community as a whole. Graphics are very nice but at the same time somehow strangely bland as GizmoTheMogwai said. Some of the scenery is breathtaking (reminds me of Oblivion sometimes) and some areas are genuinely creepy eg The Old Forest. I absolutely hate the inventory icons though.

WOW seems more polished and has beautiful graphics too but done in a more simplistic & cartoony manner. Lots of kiddies on here though which can be amusing & annoying at the same time ;)

Try both. I have accounts on both games & dip into them both from time to time.

The style of WoW sounds more appealing.
Looking at the 2 websites, WoW looks more professional and appealing.
I suppose those millions of subscribers can't be wrong, can they?

The most fun you will have in WoW is getting to level 40, not having to worry about raiding or any of that crap.

LOTRO combat system is rather slow and queues up attacks, WoW has a much more fluid style and doesn't queue attacks up.

Try both, you will know what I mean after playing LOTRO.

In your opinion, that's not fact and a lot of people would disagree. :)

Thanks,WoW it is.
WoW seems more arcadey and immediate.
I hate queue attacks.
I have looked at screens and although it's clear that LOTR looks better, I find WoW seems to have more character and appeal.
But I suppose the fact that LOTR has to stick to the LOTR mythology could be it's achilles heel.
The cartoony look of WoW appeals to me more.
Thanks for the help.
I managed to buy the WOW battlechest and wrath of the lich king for £30 all in.

the graphics in wow get better as you go through the expansions, try to pick a fairly high populated server, this will make it a bit easier to find groups for dungeons and raids. also before you start make a trial account before you activate your cd keys, you'll get 14 free days :).

I would suggest Sylvanas if you go Alliance, Magtheridon server if you go Horde, they are very active servers for those factions and you will have no problems finding groups.

Chromaggus has a pretty good balance of Horde/Alliance not sure about the rest.

It all depends really on what you want with an MMO, do you want something that is easy to play, has pvp, good community, high res textures, big player base....

It also depends on your age as lotro has a more mature user base and commuity whilst wow is a lot younger generally.

I've had experience of both and have been playing lotro since beta, i prefer lotro due to the story line, community and general gameplay difference from wow. Whilst it does not have proper pvp it has pvmp where you fight player controlled monsters in a specialized pvmp zone called Ettenmoors where you fight for control of keeps and gain points (imfamy / reknown).

Having played both I think wow is the better game, but they both get mind numbingly boring after a while, wow can last years though, lotr lasted me about 4 months.

wow is more a social game more than anything, getting in with the right people can be the difference between fun and boredom.
