Been out of the loop for a while now, Got;

q6600 @ 3600mhz
4gb corsair 800mhz
8800gt with the thermalright cooler.

I noticed ive started struggling in arma2 and fancy a graphics upgrade. Ive had 9800pro, 6800gt, x850xtx, x1950xtx and the 8800gt so had cards from both barns.

I game at 1680x1050

What car would suit my needs and give me good performance for at least a year?

quiet/adjustable fan would be good too:)

I would suggest the XfX version though, although it's 5 quid more, when overclocked it can do virtually 1ghz core, which is the dogs ********!

Just bought the XFX XT from OCUK for the current advertised price but not installed it yet as I'm waiting on my old stuff selling on the bay. For the price I think its tremendous value and impossible to beat in that price bracket.

What does that even mean? They put out better cards tha Nvidia for the prices that the majority can afford.

Any company can put out insane cards if they can charge insane prices for them. Its the balance of affordability and performance that makes it a good or a bad card.

tounchy subject or you get fanbois scream at us and each other :P

I think the reason why no one recommends Nvida anymore is the principle "bang for buck", Nvidas are too expesnive for what they really are, and often they offer nothing special, over ATI so why when you can save ££ on the card and you can but it someware else or keep it for a new game or something (every little helps)

its a very tight subject Nvida card put simpliery are not worth thier price but are good cards all the same, I have limits on what I pay for a "decent card" anyway

Top end nvidia cards are for those people who would rather spend the extra 'cos they know if they go with ATI, a week or two later they'll wish they spent the extra to have that little extra performance/bragging rights and/or money isn't an issue. I wanted the 280 purely because it is the most powerful single GPU in the world ;)

Check my posts, I've been recommending ATI left right and centre though with these current prices!

Or as known as fools?

It's like people who buy Extreme Edition Intel CPUs knowing they offer nothing over a standard edition CPU.

All you get is an unlocked multi, which doesn't actually mean you'll get higher overclocks.

Ok, there's the potential for higher overclocks, but for the difference in cost, it's not worth it.

nVidia give themselves some sort of 'self imposed prestige' that affects a lot of noobs to computers.

I think they make good cards, but they've priced them selves in to a corner. They can't compete on price, so they play the prestige card knowing that there is a lot of people who will fall for it.

I don't understand why anyone would for example buy a GTX285 over a a 4890. You pay almost twice the price for a performance difference that you won't really see in game, especially not for the extra £100+ you'd pay for a 285.

This isn't an ATi versus nVidia post, it's a all about value for money, and at the moment, nVidia doesn't seem to understand value for money and it looks like they're not going to learn any time soon with the rumors of the GT300s going around.

i'd pay maybe 5% more for an equivalent spec nvidia card (as in the gtx260 192sp vs 4870 512) for their driver support, but no more. the 4890 is the mid-high range no brainer right now, and why nvidia aren't pricing the 275 accordingly is beyond me.

Little harsh calling people who buy high end nvidia cards fools.

This stems way beyond just graphics cards. Providing the performance is superior, in this case it is, then paying more for something that's better isn't that bad of a situation. Regardless of the higher premium, if something is better, then you can bet someone will want it.

At the end of the day, we are talking less than £100 difference, which is minuscule compared the price variations in cars, homes, holidays etc etc

My personal mentality is, if you can get something better and its worth the wait other than going for the cheaper option that's not as good, be patient. So if you were buying a 4890 for example for £140, is it worth waiting 1 or 2 weeks to save up an extra £80 for the top?

Depends how you look at it. Some people will call you a fool for buying it brand new in the first place when you look at he bargains that can be had in the member market ;)

Just keep and open mind and respect there's two sides of the coin :)

Given how many please spec me a £500-£750 build a £100 premium is a fairly big chuck.

extreme exapmle but if you applied it to other things would you pay an extra £100 for say a choclate bar, it may be the best in the world but is it worth it? i don't think so.

Edit: reading it back sounds unintentionaly harsh but you ge my point.

A bar of chocolate costs £1.40, you may well pay £2.20 for the better stuff.

If a car costs £14,000, you may well be interested in a £22,000 car, just have to pay it off longer.

Crude example I know, but its all relative. If we go by your logic, is a £100 premium for a slightly better house not worth it...
