Hi,

Upgraded from a 8800gts to a xfx 4890 black edition last week , lovely card very quick but just too noisy. I cant change the location of the pc and it's driving me, the wife and kids loopy, it sounds like a dust buster running inside the pc case whenever I play games like WoW or Crysis Warhead. At load it's at about 65degrees and very noisy , when idle surfing the web it's fine and a temp of low-mid 50degrees. I dont want to wait til winter to play my pc but its seriously doing my head in, have pointed a small desk fan at the card which doesnt make much difference, just seems the fans are very loud in any game. Any ideas before I flog it off for a little less than I paid for it, would rather not but it really is doing me in.

P.s anyone know how quiet the paliat gtx275s at load ?

Grab an aftermarket cooler for it. Or if you'd rather get a new card, if the Palit 275s are anything like the Palit 260s, they should be about average in terms of noise.

Why not try the simple solution first ? Try changing the fan speed in the 'overdrive' tab of the catalyst control centre. It can afford to get a bit hotter than 65 at load, and the reduction in fan speed could be enough to take the edge off the noise.
Take it carefully and test as you go though, don't want to risk stability.

Tried that it seems to ignore the setting when I try manual setting of fan, I think it will automatically ramp up if it thinks it's getting too hot.

Is adding some sound proofing to your case an option or putting it in a fan cooled cupboard?

Would you mind letting me know how you got on and if it makes a difference please ?

Only problem is I've currently got all my current computer bits for sale on the bay and all my new bits are waiting to move in so it may be a wee while yet but I'll certainly post how good/bad it is.:)

Those coolers are OK, but they're still pretty noisy.
I found that too - had to 7v mine to get them quiet.

If you're happy changing a cooler then the Accelero would be good.

If you don't wanna touch the cooler then something like a 260/275 would be better.

Hang on, have you manualy set the fan to a certain speed? if so what % is it at?

If not, go into CCC and into Overdrive, make sure the key button is highlighted also the check box for setting the fan and stick it at 30%, it doesnt need to be any higher unless it is incredibly hot in your house or you have it next to a radiator.

If you still think it's too loud there is practicaly nothing you can do about it, even aftermarket fans will be pretty the same.

Finally got this card installed with the Neo Vortex, man it looks great, very good idiot proof instructions and boy does it look cool. More to the point its very quiet at all speeds, even 100%. Temps at idle 42c. So far have only played Fallout 3 and at load temp was 52c! Used Arctic Silver 5, very very impressed for £11 quid.:D
