from both a pure performance and overclocked scale, aswell as price.

c2d dual core - c2d quad core - amd phenom x2 - 775 i7 ?

Im trying to work out how much more performance i will get via price, and therefore choose between i7 920, phenom 2 940 and a q6700.

Ie is it worth buying i7 yet if phenom 2 will keep up etc ?

I can't tell what you're asking.

Which is best depends very much on what use you have in mind for it, and to a lesser extent your overclocking ability and cooling system. A 4ghz e8*00 is very quick at almost anything, and is my personal favourite out of the chips I've had so far. When I finally get a q9*50 to over 3.8 I suspect I'll prefer that

well its either

e5200 or q6700 or phenom II 940 or i7 920. Wont be any other chips in the family.

The problem with i7 is to buy a decent MB costs more than the cpu, then another £80 in ram. So it adds up quickly.

Its going to be mainly for gaming with slight photoshopping and once a week ripping an 800mb movie file to a 4.*gb dvd to watch at a mates, something that took about 45mins on an e5200 @ 3.8ghz :)

Phenom 940 offers the best value for money right now at jus about £130. And since its jus DDR2, you can scoop up 4GB 1066mhz at less than £40. No point going with a dead socket so the only option available from Intel is the i7 which is ridiculously expensive (for all parts combined).

If you have the money, i7 is the way to go. If youre on a budget, the 940 will still satisfy you.

No point going with a dead socket

This is poor reasoning. Your recommended i7 is already making noises about stopping sale of the cheaper end of the range. Buy whichever system offers the best performance now, predicting the future with consumer electronics is unwise.

Why not any other chips in the family? The q9550 is fairly cheap at the moment and likely to make it to 4ghz. That's scary quick, and significantly better than the q6700.

I'm unsure how the very latest phenom 2 chips compare to heavily overclocked 775 intels, I very much doubt there's much in it.

I was going to buy a Phenom X4 940 3.0Ghz quad, but i'm building a HTPC so for me low TDP was important so 125W is out of the question. AMD do the Phenom X4 9350e which has a TDP of 65W but is only clocked at 2.0Ghz, so in the end i'm paying a premium for an Intel Core2 Quad Q9550S at 2.83Ghz and 65W (note the 'S', the standard Q9550 is 95W). I know 775 is effectively a 'dead socket' as moppy89 puts it, but it's the best CPU to meet my balance of high performance but low heat.
