I've just dropped a Q9550 into my Shuttle and the temps idle are around 40'c and under full load it rises to 80c

Both the heatsink and cpu have been lapped and used AS5, what sort of temps do they run at and what are their thresholds ?

MW

Temps will vary quite a bit on various rigs according to airflow and cooling etc, but as an example my EO stepping at 3.6ghz idles at 31-30-29-29, loads at 54-51-47-47 in prime small fft, ibt usually adds 5c or so to those load temps, temp threshold is 100c.

bah the fsb and multiplier are unlocked but can only select 6-8 where 8.5 is the default so i can only underclock the cpu. The 333 fsb also wont boot at 340 :(

You may need a bios update to enable the 8.5 multi. I had the same issue when i first installed mine.

ide expect it to be a little bit toasty in a shuttle tbh, which shuttle is it?.

Have a C1 stepping which sits at 3.6, idles at 37-32-35-35 and under full load it's 68-66-67-66.. Have noticed temps increased a good few degrees with this run of hot (ish) weather, was sitting at 32-30-30-30 whilst idle.. On a side note beer does help for cooling tho ;)

My one isn't overclocked atm and idles around 21 on all cores, hottests I've had it was around 38. This said, there are a lot of fans in my case and a third party heat sink on the cpu.

What stepping is it? If it's a C1 then it's pretty normal, especially in a small case like yours.

I'd replace it with something else if it's a C1. They clock OK but you need mega cooling to keep it in safe temps.
