I'd buy a phone out right - always some good good deals about that are really cheep. Then go with o2 Simplicity which has 600 xmins, 1200 texts and a free alowace eg extra 200 xmins, free internet, free landline calls, free o2 to o2 calls etc.
The mins you get on contract is terrible and the best bit about simplicity is you can cancel any time as you only need 30days.
T-Mobile have some decent sim only 30 day contracts like the £20 one I'm on at the moment gives you 600 x-net minutes and unlimited texts as well as 1gb data allowance (which is nice compared to O2s 200-250mb or whatever).
Ive been on all networks and been on £20/month, £25/month and £30 a month contracts.
I am now with Tesco mobile pay and go and its by far the best.
£15 topup gets you £30 worth of call credit for the month. I use the £30 in the month then have £15 left. Best customer service ever, straight through on sunday evening to someone speaking english, sending me a new sim card for free with all my credit in tact and my old number.
Reception is fantastic (better than mates or orange and vodafone)
£20 a month gets you £40 free credit

They piggyback on the O2 network.
