Hey fellas,
I want to buy a TV for around £550.

It'll be for gaming and films (SD but with a mind for Blueray) and occassional television.

PQ, black levels and motion handling are important to me (as its a gaming / film TV) I'm sat 5-6 feet away, if that.

I'm thinking 32"-37". So what do ya recommend?

Cheers,
Ant

Been looking at the Panny TXP42X10 plasma.

Seems perfect, only downside is it isn't 1080p. Do you reckon this'll be a big issue?

Yes

(I have last years 37" Panasonic plasma, a+ for movies, console, tv. PC use was not great - it doesn't do detailed crisp well enough. A 1080p Bravia should be in that sort of price range, but it won't be quite as good on movies.)

Where possible its definitely worth trying to get a 1080p TV for gaming without doubt. 32" maybe not, but anything bigger I would recommend it for sure...

You definitely can't go far wrong with the latest Panasonic Plasma's though for all round quality, but unsure if any of their 1080p set's would fall in your price bracket.

Perhaps take a look at some of the Samsung & LG 42" Plasma's as there are generally not too many horribly bad Plasma screens (unlike the fluctuations between LCD quality) but just keep a look out for that full native 1080p combatibility...

tis a great TV

depends on your gaming , as i havent tried that on it, but for SD TV its a lovely bit of TV for the price

If most of the viewing is SD films then surely it would actually look better for most movies?

It's bloody brilliant for everything but being a PC monitor, HD & SD looks great; and console games also look great. PC stuff that assume hires, sharper pictures does not look great. It's too low resolution, blurry and and the colours bleed for this usage.

An LCD will handle all uses, but not be anywhere near as good at this price for watching video.

Unless you sit closer than 5ft constantly, look at static pictures with no moving video at all, or use it a lot as a pc monitor, then NO.

You must also realise than 95% of 360 and PS3 games out there are only 720p native resolution anywhere, so 1080p won't make them look any better.

What is you viewing distance and % usage (E.g. 60% x360, 40% sky) ?

I'd say gaming/Films/TV - 55/35/10

But with a nice set i may watch more telly :)

Plasma 37" looks the most appropriate. It's deciding whether to forgo Panasonic for 1080p, and get an LG or Sammy.

you can pick my Toshiba Regza 37" up for about 500ish now probs (I payed 600 about 9months back). I use it for gaming through DVI-D - HDMI and absoloutely LOVE it.

yeah i'm using a toshiba 37" rv555db atm to type this, I am very impressed with it

cant fault it to be honest, not as good as my kuro though :)

Have a browse over at avforums, I haven't seen many LGs lately.

Also the toshiba regza sets are alright but nothing to right home about, and I would take sony, samsung, and especiallly panasonic over them.

Nice one Warbie :)

I'm very close to making a decision on the 37X10. I'm sitting very close and at £550 with a 5 year guarantee I don't think that's bad at all :)

Should have bought a PX80 when I had the chance :p
