ECSTATIC space officials at Nasa could be about to unveil one of their most stunning discoveries for 40 years — new and amazingly clear footage of the first moon landing.

The release of the new images next month could be one of the most talked about events of the summer.

The television images the world has been used to seeing of the historic moment when Neil Armstrong descended down a ladder onto the moon’s surface in 1969 is grainy, blurry and dark.

The following scenes, in which the astronauts move around the lunar lander, are so murky it is difficult to make out exactly what is

Excellent, it makes it all the more important as there was no photo's of armstrong while on the moon, as Buzz never took any pictures of him.

Look forward to seeing these.

I wouldnt say he was trolling. Some photos were doctored, that does not mean they were faked totally.

Im looking forward to seeing these, the current film we have seen is so terrible in quality.
 
I'm looking forward to it, though it's hard to imagine they lost these amazing photos immediately after the expoditions :s

Do you not think that maybe, seeing ass the anniversary is coming up, they might be going through all their old stores quite extensively from that time to find things to display, and just by happy co-incidence they found this?

But, oh no, its always a conspiracy isn't it? :rolleyes:

And indeed this is so. In fact, they're going through a lot of their old archives to convert the data into digital form for long-term storage. Much of the old data is on magnetic tape (which degrades over time), and some of it is stored in formats that relied upon long since defunct hardware.

To be fair to Teki, a lot of what he posts is fringe at best, and full-on conspiracy at worst, but he's no Magick and sensible threads happen. This is one of those. However, before this thread is done I fully expect someone to drag out a conspiracy. No doubt they'll claim all the footage is CG or some other such nonsense.

Not a conspiracy.

I also just find it slightly strange that they (as NASA)

1.) Managed to loose probably the most important evidence of the most important event ever in a new and amazingly clear format.

2.) Then miraculously find it again - after 40 years
3.) Lets face it - They never bothered to look much even though they don't really have much achive material and it is quite important to them.
4.) And something the whole world would love to see & treasure again.
5.) Just, just, just in the nic of time for for the moon anniversary.
6.) And just 2 weeks after the HD Japanese Kaguya probe video (the first HD - video of the moon surface) - and the first media for a long time.
7.) 2 weeks after the videos from the largest lunar mission since Apollo - that is more simpler, sophisticated and detailed (but unfortunately not American)

Funny that isn't it.

But believe what you want to.

I'm not sure why anyone should be surprised that these went missing: NASA's archive's must be the size of a major department store.

As for doctoring them, why not - I'd rather I could make out what was going on than suffer for authenticity.

When dealing with the sheer number of items somewhere like Nasa will have in the archives, even the best indexing system fails, especially if it's not fully computerised (as the NASA archives probably weren't in the early days)

I suspect NASA have hundreds of thousands (millions even) of items in their archives, and all it takes to lose something like these tapes is for someone not to have made a note on an index card when moving them (or on computer these days), for them to have been put in the wrong place, or even for something to have been put in front of them.
Even just losing something like a 6x4" index card could have meant losing them for a long time until a full inventory is done (and in the case of something like magnetic tapes they might just have a serial number noted on them, so could require specialist equipment to read the contents).

It's nice to see that NASA have found the tapes again :)
Not that it's ever going to stop the conspiracy theorists.
