Arma 2

Its my opinion that ARMA2 is the best game to have been released since Stalker SHOC.

You may see a link here, both were dismissed as buggy or unpolished. But tbh, why is polishing better than atmosphere or gameplay, you play so much souless carp these days.

the combat is incredible, i don't know wtf you are talking about but i've had some of the most incredible firefights, both urban and long range. Because its all so dynamic. you find your self remembering moments so brilliant, yet none of its been scripted. This is real next gen stuff, screw the 'better animations makes a better game' crowd that seem to always get there way these days (assasins creed/crysis/cod countless others).

Just give it time, chap. Get a headset, get into some online scraps and see what the game is really about... The user-generated content and large scale combat involving stacks of human players is what the series has always really excelled at.

I feel for you if you're suffering from bugs and glitching, I really do. There's very little more frustrating in PC gaming, especially when the majority of other players seem to be suffering not a jot from what you are. Hope a patch sorts it for you, games like this are too good to miss out on due to ropey code.

But imagine ArmA 2 if it also had polished animations and interface!

Why can't a game have both sides :p

Becasue Dev time/money would be spent on things less important.

I would rather then spent their money on improving core components of the gameplay than the menu syste.

Also, every dev team as its strong points. Look at GRID, their strength was graphics which were great yet they had no idea about car handling.

I think the sales figures for ARMA 2 over the next year will speak for itself. I hope this brings a revival to the PC platform of unforgiving/Not for noobs type games of all genres.

I've only tried the demo but I was impressed. Think I'll be buying it. Never played the first Arma but I loved OFP. I just wish they'd spent more time on the overly complex controls and user interface. They dont seem to be learning on that front. Its a bit of an afterthought when compared with some of the brilliant stuff the game succeeds on in other areas.

I think the term "Operation flashpoint 1.75 with a dress on" is bit unfair... Have you played OpFlash lately or are you going by rose tinted memories?

I think too many people expect pick up and play 'you are the hero' style gameplay.
In reality, you are expendible and there's not much heroics. Surviving and just getting through the mission is what it's about.

I have not played Operation Flashpoint for years to be honest. I thought it was ok back then but i would never install it again. Arma 1 is the same as Arma 2 ; An unfinished yet ambitious project that maybe i should try in a years time when its better. In all honesty we have to admit that the game is broken, which is why 90% of the Arma 2 topic in this forum is about performance / bugs. Neverless it is enjoyed by many of you here. Maybe i will try it again, but it wont be for a while.

I now only play Red Orchestra, it gives me my fix of simulation and my passion for the WW2 genre.

To be honest though GRID was never about handling, it was for the arcade racers who enjoy eye candy rather than too much throttle = oversteer etc.

Before you ditch Arma 2... play multiplayer with us guys. I don't like single player at all but I love multiplayer when there is a good friendly team on.

I belive arma2 has the same controls as operation flashpoint and arma I m I right?

I picked this up a week ago but have only really got round to having a proper go, I absolutely loved the original Operation Flashpoint, but I have to say from the bits of Arma 2 I have seen that I am really disappointed. The training mission seems bug ridden, it took many tries of reloading to get past the medic part of the training as my character kept getting stuck to the floor when I carried the patient. Then when I finally did get past the medic part, the enemies on the MOUNT training came and killed me whilst I was doing the ground to ground explosives training.

When the bugs were not manifesting themselves I did thoroughly enjoy the game. I have to admit I have not tried any of the SP missions yet so perhaps they are bug free (or at least thats what I hope).

yep bug ridden un helpful controls very bland graphically. people brought the game thought it was aweful why cant people except that.

Back to BF2 with you. Youre never going to enjoy the game, just flog it and leave it behind and chalk one up to experience.

*Mullins, ignore the bugged out training and give the MP a go. Its in the MP arranging thread and really is the game at its brightest and best (some of the time - I still enjoy the SP missions for an easy bite and simple objectives!). Group assaults are intense and make sure youre on the TS server. Listen to Shadowze, he comes up with some quite good tips and organisation interspersed with random swearing, and experience a game as close to realistic infantry combat as you can currently get. It can occassionally go all pear shaped, like when i flew my blackhawk full of infantry into a tree last night, but put up with the frustrations and its very rewarding.

So, guys how does this compare to BF2. Im a big fan of BF, but not because of the frantic style, more because of the team play element. I am thinking of buying it and I am a patient gamer who prefers multi-player. Will it have longevity in terms of online play?

Will download the demo when i get home.

Especially when TKing the noob idiot that tried to ruin our game (shooting fish in a barrel ;) )

But that is not the game bug, just you being rubbish :p

When you do play it, do the training, but not as a representation of the game, just to learn the controls.
Then play some single player, but not as a representation of the game, just to learn the interface and map reading etc.
Then get on the OcUK server, with teamspeak, and find out what the game is all about, and what teamplay should be (BF2 is good for teamplay, but this is excellent).

Imagine 12 people in a chopper go to drop off near an objective in the dark (with NV goggles), slowly move on foot shooting enemies, and complete the objective. The pilot flies the chopper back in, you head back to the carrier to reload, and as you are flying, the sun gradually comes up (take off nv goggles). You head back out on the chopper towards the next objective.

So much better than BF2.

Went on a 50 player server last night. We has 3 blackhawks jam packed with players all fly to a town to assault it. We had to take out some armour but none had any anti tank weapons left. So we called in an airstrike. This airstike was by another player and the adrenaline rush was amazing.

This is where the game shines. Find a good server thats not full of muppets and before you know it you'll be on here singing its praises
