flying out for a few days mainly to see Springsteen but gonna be spending time in Munich, anyone got any good places / bars ect that i can visit

If you fancy a trip out of Munich catch the train (U-Bahn or S-Bahn can't remember) out to Kloster Andechs - a monastery with its own brewery. After a couple of glasses of Andechser Doppelbock you'll feel no pain!

Find yourself a good Steinhouse. Don't what ever you do order the bludwurst sausage.

oh no what's wrong with the bludwurst?

sounds like a plan, cheers mate will look into it

Been to Munich for Oktoberfest. It's kinda dull tbh.

i will ignore your statement as you have been to Oktoberfest

Nothing if you like grey and purple squirting bags of boiled meat and blood on a bed of sauerkraut with horseradish root shavings as a side garnish. :( I ate pretzels that night, and a MacD's on the way home.

On the other hand my mate from work had the bratwurst and that looked much better.

Most importantly though, the beers are big, they taste good and the pretzels make excellent mid-beer munchies. :)

i see, i have been ill the last few days and doc said if im gonna fly keep off the booze........ but i'm hoping for a full recovery for tomorrow and yes beer and pretzels will be the order of the day!

I've never heard of bludwurst and I lived in Munich for 5 years? Bratwurst is more of a northern German thing as well. Weisswurst and currywurst seem to be the most popular sausage based meals in Bavaria.

Jimlad, get off at Gieselestrasse u-bahn and walk up and down Leopoldstrasse, lots of outdoor cafes/bars/clubs at night and you can walk down to the old town (Marienplatz). If you fancy a beer garden the the Chinese Tower is in the Englischegarten near there as well. If it's clear like in the UK you could take a trip up the Olympia Tower (U3 to Olympiapark from Marienplatz), some amazing views up there and the park itself is nice.

Munich is far from dull, but you do get a lot of numpties around at Oktoberfest time.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, get a lovely warm Brezn (pretzel shaped bread, warm) from a beer garden and some lovely strong Obazda cheese. So yummy. The cheese looks orangy with red onion in it.

thanks mate, useful info i'm staying at 'the4you hostel'

can i ask how fair is the airport to the centre of munich and what's a good price to pay and a good beer to drink?

Get on a train at the airport, buy a ticket in the terminal. I think it's something like 8 Euros pp, quick service too. Sticks you pretty much in the centre of the city. Wicksta can you remember exactly how much it was?

Beer wise... it's all good mate. :)

Its about 45 minutes on the S-Bahn to Hauptbahnhof where your hostel is, there are two trains which both terminate at the airport and enter Munich from different sides. One is slightly quicker to the Hauptbahnhof than the other one, but I'd just jump on the first one to be honest as you can't go wrong. The area around that hostel is ok, but there are nicer places to look. Have a look down Schillerstrasse near there for a laugh which is purely computer component shops and sex shops, not sure why they are both next to each other. ;)

If you walk from your hostel via karlsplatz you can see the sights up to Marienplatz and then jump on the U3 or U6 to the younger areas (Gieselestrasse etc that I mentioned earlier).

Other good places for young people are around Ostbahnhof, a place called KultFabrik which has lots of different bars and clubs, it's more of a nighttime thing though unless they have a show on or something. The website is here:

Beers were about the same price as in London I'd say, but I left in 2004 and the exchange rate has changed a lot since then so it will be more expensive now I guess.

If you want to do the tourist thing then go to the Hofbrauhaus, it's tacky but I guess it's a laugh if you are just visiting. That is just round the corner from Marienplatz.

This is probably your most important friend :)

On your way home check out the Airbrau beer garden in the airport (between the two terminals) - they brew their own beer there and have a nice garden to sit in.

EDIT: Another edit, make sure you use that S/U-bahn map in the link rather than one in a guide book, it has changed a hell of a lot in the past few years with line numbers changing and losing the Londond Underground type colours that they had until recently. I think I'd probably get lost now!

The airport is miles from the city center and taxi's are expensive. I'm working near the Alianz arena and it's just shy of 50 euros for a taxi there, you could probably add another 20 to the center. My advice, get the train to the center and the u-bahn from there, cheap and quick!

I'm living in schwabing, near munchener freiheit. There are plenty of bars, places to eat and of course the English garden nearby.

The beers, try them all! I've not had a bad one. They're quite expensive so if you're feeling cheap go to a tenglemann where they are about 80 cents a bottle.

let me know how you find munich, i've been here 3 weeks but haven't really had a chance to get out and about with work getting in the way - damn 12 hour days!

-------

Air brau, yes drunk a fair bit of this waiting for my flights on a Friday, 2.30 a pint!

Aussie friendly too :)

Hofbrauhaus= it's fun, yes tacky, but get into the spirit of things and it's a laugh.

And Munich or Munchen is fairly easy to get around by foot- get a good guide book and clear map - but the locals are very helpful even when asking for info in English.

if you have time then i'd def rec
