"ID cards will not be compulsory"

they already are compulsory if you have certain jobs and if it does happen. Then you can bet it won't be long till they are compulsory.

? It was going to be compulsory for people who work on or around aircraft but that has been scrapped, who is it compulsory for?

My god, yet again all we've been saying for all these years has been proved right, it was all a con and a great big pile of tosh.

Can we have a role call for all those who couldnt believe their government would lie to them?

Mr Johnson even admitted the suggestion the cards would help combat terrorism was exaggerated as he accepted the Government should never have allowed "The perception to go around that they were a panacea for terrorism"

You know who you are, 2 days in the "gullible" corner for you, followed by a week in the "Naive" cupboard.

They're not going to be compulsory because Labour are going to lose the next election and then we're done with the damned things.

I think it is going to die a death, they wont public admit it was, like many of their laws and policies, a bunch of reactionist crap that had they sat down and thought about it for 5 minutes they would have dismissed it as a stupid idea instantly. Instead what will happen is, it will just be wound down and never mentioned again to try and save one of Gordons many faces.

No because the ***** trying to push it through will lose the next election before it comes to fruition. It's like they actively try to lose votes all. the. time.

lets face it, they wont be compulsory but over time it'll become gradually more difficult to do anything without one. i don't even have 2 legal forms of ID apparently so that makes things very difficult.

Actually a compulsory ID car scheme is quite a good idea, there are loads of benefits and lots of countries have them while still remaining liberal democracies. The government's problem is that a) we've missed the boat, it would have been cheap to set up an ID card scheme in the '60s, it's too much now, and b) they massively overstated the case for combating terrorism with ID cards, and the public didn't buy it.
