Would you hold fire on splashing out on new gaming rig right now?

The release of new Graphics cards later on year puts me off wasting over £1000 right now.

Surely the dx11 cards will perform a lot better than current crop, as they don't impress me a lot. Several Hundred on a GPU that can't even max out the best game graphics wise(crysis) and run smooth?

Lets face it Graphics in games are nothing special. The game trailer graphics are what should be in games now, fact they can create that shows it is possible. I watched a stunning trailer of a new game coming soon, and the game graphics will be nothing like it.

Surely the Core I7 will come down in price next month.

Sounds like a rant:D but more a discussion and wondering whats peoples thoughts.

Spend now or hold off a while:confused:

Gaming wise I7 doesn't offer much of a boost for gaming over the top end of 775.

I remember that Operation Flash point didn't run smoothly on the current crop of cards. It just happens that way some times. Plus crysis is seeming to be be a mess coding wise.

dx11 games won't be out for ages. dx11 graphics cards will be very expensive on release. Cheap i7 chips are being phased out and i5 being released.
Dx10 cars are extremely good price and stunning performance. It all depends what you have.

Crysis has bad coding, so wont ever run well on everything maxed out....Warhead is far better...and Crysis 2 should be ok as well.

the way i see it is.... try to get the most powerful PCU now/value for money, plus the case and the PSU.... BUT leave the mobo/card right up until the last moment, because these are updated all the time....that's if, you're intending to spread the cost over a period of time like i am.

but the safest to get right now is the case... the PSU and Hard drive only.... this is because the new Athlon due out within 3 weeks, might be worth buying, and it might drop the prices of the existing ``black editions``...this will also, force down the prices of the Intel i7....

dont buy the CPU now, wait 2 months

How much will this Core I5 cost? will it be better than core i7 920? Will the price reflect this?

Really is stupid how they release stuff so quickly, puts people off buying. At least give it a year or two before new stock, not every 6 months.

i5 is menat to be similar speeds to the i7920. But has draw backs. IIRC only supports dual channel ddr3 not triple channel and doesn't have some other great features. But then it will also have sata3 capability. Although no sata3 hdds at the moment.

Think we will have to wait for some proper reviews.

Technology is always increasing and it is never a good time to buy. Just set your budget and buy when your ready. it's hardly ever worth waiting. Unless a new release is happening within a few weeks.

i5 slower than i7 but cheaper. Thats the plan anyway, need a different motherboard for each. Don't know anything about amd's next effort.

If spreading the cost of a new system over time, place everything into a savings account and leave it there. Electronics (generally) decrease in price with time. Decide roughly what you want, and buy the components when they happen to be on special offer.

Things are different when upgrading. I'm currently putting all my time and effort into my case and water cooling, which will survive the next component upgrade, and hopefully every other upgrade for years to come. Similarly my psu is warrantied for 7 years, so hopefully won't ever need to be taken out of the case. This is my approximation to saving money, buying things that should last.

I am glad I saw this thread. I was going to get a GTX295, but if DX11 cards are coming out I will hold fire as surely they will be better than anything out at the moment?

You can say that about every new card. You going to keep waiting for every new release? as each release will be better than the old ones.

You are right in saying that, last time around I was building a PC it was on the verge of DX10. I will not be able to buy all my components until September so I think for my self maybe waiting that extra month for the new OS/Cards would be worth it + I would have a little bit more money to spend.

However I agree 100% with what you said.

If the new card is two weeks away, though, it's probably going to be really expensive for the first six months. Current graphics cards are pretty good value.

Well, i'm selling my Q6600, GTX 280 system to my lil' brother for half the price i got it at, (£800, selling to him for £400) because he's at University (i'm at fulltime work) and his computer is really old and it's a shame he has to play current games at the lowest resolution and suffer FPS problems as well.

That said, i'm considering going either Intel Core i7, GTX 260 Nvidia system or AMD Phenom II X4 955, 4890 Radeon ATI system. Both are within my budget, the AMD, ATI system is £100 cheaper but i'm still contemplating which one to get.

Dx11 i'm not fussed about, because i know whichever card i get it will last me another year or so, so it's still money well spent.

Its not that its dx11 products its more competition at the price points if they don't offer as much as the 4800 bang ofr buck they will atleast lower card prices that are currently out. i.e look at the 9800x2 when the 200 series was launched.

Well considering Crysis is a coded mess. Also what a lot of people forget to consider, maybe just maybe they created a game that currently should run smooth on medium on current gen and high on next gen, future proofing maybe?

Also yes they can create games like cinematic scenes but no computer could handles that about of data.

Imagine fallout 3, Custom max LOD, which crysis graphics, that would put every computer to shame..
Also not many games are utilised for DX10 tbh. We should see a lot of them coming out though from now on.

Having a DX11 card will only be useful when there's DX11 games to play, and a number of them at that. So, I'd say it's probably at least 2 years away from being useful.

You'd be nuts to hold off from getting a decent value current gen card, of which there are quite a few, just for DX11. I wouldn't put the 295 into that category IMO, unless you game at a huge resolution.

Of course he should hold out. Whether you agree or not, that card will be out of date in a couple of months maybe even weeks.

If he has the money to splash on a GTX295, he might aswell hold on for next gen cards.

Even if you on a budget, you should hold out, as person above says the prices will drop once the new ones out.

Either way silly time to buy a GPU imo.
