My old system -
Q6600 (stock) energy efficient 95W SLACR version
4x1GB DDR2 COrsair Dominator
MSI P7N SLI Platinum
CM-690
(with very little in the way of cable management)
used to idle around 17/18C (and drop as low as 11C when i had my windows open) and 32C full load IBT.
The motherboard then got fried (thanks to an inconsiderate neighbour who didnt understand kettles+heaters were banned because of the low Ampage of our rooms and continued to short out our power) and I removed + reinstalled the heatsink about 3 times:
off+on to test CPU in friends PC
off+on for first RMA
off+on for second RMA (bent socket pins).
I then noticed the temps had raised to 25C idle and did an IBT test getting 40C (still acceptable as far as I was concerned) but out of curiosity I uninstalled, cleaned and reinstalled the cooler but temps didnt really change noticeably (I did also completely clean out my case and filters).
I then upgraded my system to -
Q9550 yorkfield
EVGA 750i F T W SLI (why do they censor F T W ?)
Silverstone RV01B-W
which included uninstalling and reinstalling the cooler.
I also took some time on the cable management and thought it looked pretty decent.
I have since noticed a rather large temp increase to (idle) -
#0 42
#1 35
#2 42
#3 42
So ran a Prime95 heat torture test and peaked at -
#0 85
#1 77
#2 81
#3 80
At first I put it down to the new CPU being hotter, the summer heatwave, the new case not being as cool as the CM-690 . . .
But im starting to think maybe in all the removing + reinstalling the Zalman the cross strut thats used to press the contact plate against the CPU has been bent out so the contact isnt as good as it was, and maybe the thermal compound (used the stock zalman stuff all the way through so probly 9 months old now) has began to decay or something . . .
Any ideas ?
Im thinking of
trying the stock cooler to see what temps I hit there.
buying some arctic silver 5.
finding a new/spare cross strut.
buying a Prolimatech Megahalems.
cheers
