So i just finished reading the first 2 books of the black magician trilogy and i have to say im impressed with these books, enjoying them as much as i enjoyed both feist and gemmell.

anyone else read these and have any thoughts or opinions?
 
I've read them, I enjoyed them, but I didn't find them quite as 'exciting' or gripping as some of the other books I've read.
I enjoyed them enough I bought them and Im interested in the second set coming soon, but I wouldn't class them as the best I've read, as I just didn't QUITE click with the characters in the way I wanted, and they felt a little short to me :)
 
Just started the 3rd one in the series, quite enjoying them so far. No up there with the greats, but pretty close. Best new writer I've really loved recently is Peter V. Brett / The Painted Man.
 
ive read the first one
enjoyed it but as mentioned didnt feel the connection with the characters as much as in say feists works
 
I class Trudi under the mass market fantasy writers a step above the pulp writers like Dan Brown (I know, he isn't writing traditional fantasy)
 
The magicians trilogy are good books imo - she's also just released a prequel to the trilogy called "The Magicians Apprentice".

Not had a chance to read that one yet as I'm saving it for my summer hols in two weeks :)

Agreed I was blown away with how good it was to be honest. The concept was really quite fresh. I got one of the hardback copies as a present from my girlfriend. Normally she is terrible at picking books for me (dont tell her I said that :p) But I was really surprised once I started reading it :)

Looking forward to the 2nd book :)

The black magicians trilogy was a good read. It wasnt as gripping as some books. In fact there was some bits during the story that was quite dull if im honest. But well worth the read.
 
I just finished the Shadows trilogy by Brent Weeks, was a good read that kept me well entertained and involved in the story.

Yeah I read that, fantastic trilogy I thought.

Trudi Canavan is quite good too, but for me the series that shines over all other fantasy is 'A Song of Ice and Fire'. I've read a lot of fantasy and nothing has come close.

I've met Rohan a couple of times. Even had an argument with him about Tolkien (he is for, I'm against)

But yes, a fantasy writer who actually does things that are original. Have you tried his other stuff? "Chase the Morning" is good, but the sequels less so. "Spell of Empire" is a hoot.

im glad everyone is as impressed as i am, after reading the first two im still not even sure which way to story is going to go which is what i like.
 
it was an alright series. Didn't really connect with her as a writer though. mind you i seem to have that problem with female fantasy writers. weird.

The better ones are:


Ursula LeGuin (obviously)
Elizabeth Moon
Barbara Hambly
C J Cherryh
Lois McMasters Bujold
Katherine Kerr
Marion Zimmer Bradley
R A MacAvoy
Mary Gentle
Sheri S Tepper


All bar Hambly also write SF, which may or may not mean something. Some books of some of these authors stand in the middle of the two genres.

If anyone wants to read a really good "new" british fantasy author, I highly recommend the books by Joe Abercrombie. His characters are simply fantastic, in particular the character Glokta which is a superbly written character. A past war hero, so tortured and physically disfigured from war that he has become a near psychopathic and bitter torturer himself.

Awesome books by a very promising new author, highly recommend them if you like well defined and strong characters.

His first books form a trilogy,

The Blade Itself
Before they are Hanged
The Last Argument of Kings
 
I quite enjoyed the Black Magician series. Was a refreshing change to the normal run of the mill fantasy books.

I've only read 3 of those but i seem to remember feeling the same, it's really odd and obviously entirely me. I really enjoy the plot and the world they create and so on but i just don't fully identify with the lead character, it's obviously my issue not theirs as they are successful and obviously talented.

I do enjoy the books btw, it's not like i won't read them or anything, i just feel slightly more detached, which is a shame on my part.

could not enjoy robin hobb at all though, thought the first book was ok but i really didn't enjoy the others.
