I'll cut to the chase
Asus P5E X38
2x2gb Kingston PC8500 ram
His 4850
E8400 @ 3.23ghz (really doens't like overclocking, dunno if this is due to board or CPU)
Big kick ass tuniq tower thingy
1680x1050 screen

Is it worth getting a q6700? Mate will give me tenner for game, so basically will get it for £130 minus whatever I can get for my e8400 (maybe around £75-£80 based on current trends) so is it worth the £50-£60 upgrade? Thinking about stuff like Armed Assault 2 and other games in the future...

Do you have problems currently? Because i'd hold out till you see noticeable, unbareable problems and then upgrade.

The E8400 will be better in most games surely? besides, if you can't overclock the CPU with that board/mem then the q6700 will be harder to clock.

Save the money and don't switch :P

Thought you lot would say that, suppose I'll save the cash for the i7 machine after my birthday in january.

Thank you for speaking some sense to me :-P

i was in the same situation, but rather than upgrade my MB I went for the quad core to last me a while as i really dont want to upgrade the board for at least another 2 years.

However i went from conroe 2.66ghz dual to a yorkfield 2.8ghz quad. Going from an e8400 wolfdale to a kentsfield q6700 you would probably see worse performance as the newer 45nm core2 are faster clock for clock as well.

for gaming Sticking to dual core is the best option atm. i7 isn't showing much performance over Q9xxx. Intel are discontinuing the current i7 920, 940 when i5 launches. I cant remember the dates but you may wanna look at an early bday present if you want i7

What ya mean, am slightly confused with this i5 and i7 and discontinuing malarky!

Figure out what's holding the E8400 back. The P5E is a great board and should get the E8400 to 4ghz

I had a P5E a ways back and I think it did 490fsb or something with a Quad...so it should be even easier on a dual.

well theres ur problem, chuck it up to 1.35-1.4 and see what happens, wont be any problems with those voltages if your cooling is up to the job.

The current line of i7 LGA1366 chips, the 920, 940 and 965 will be replaced with higher end chips when LGA1156 is eleased due to i5 having similar performance. LGA1366 will get the first westmare hex-cores.

oh and to confuse matters, heres a report on intels naming stratagy

Hey [ZiiP]carrot,

these threads are like Groundhog day to me, they are always the same, just a bunch of experts citing their own good reasons why product [A] is a better (or wiser!) choice than product .

It is usually a never ending thread which inevitably breaks out into a forum wild west style barfight between Quad-Core and Dual-Core users! :p

As boring as it may be, an overclocked Dual-Core is obviously the best choice! (ducks a thrown roulette table!) ;)

Personal viewpoints aside and giving you a helpful answer, I would honestly say you [ZiiP]carrot need to own and use both a dual-core and a quad-core and get a feel for both of them, that's the only real way your gonna get the answer you seek! i.e you can't experience technology that well via proxy!

overclock the damm thing :P

unless the "purpose of your rig" is changing IE you will play a game called sup com and like listing to media player and all that than yeah get a quad but just for normal gaming than you know just overclock it.

I too had this same thing, I was going to get a E8600 or a Q9550 but in the end i got Q9550

That's so true, and yet so little help :)

I liked my quad more, even though the dual was faster at doing one thing at a time. I often do many things at a time.

o.O no I m not just have the ablity to multitask IE listen to music and listen out for hunters at the same time

Got a true on there, got it to 3.6ghz with 1.29v, seems happy enough. Currently 45c idle and jumps to 55-57c when running orthos...so is it safe to knock it up the vcore some more??
