Two police dogs have died in a hot vehicle parked outside the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police.

An RSPCA officer was called to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday and found two German shepherd dogs dead.

An independent vet is carrying out post-mortem tests to establish how the animals died.

The incident has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

how mind numbingly stupid can you be, those poor bloody dogs.

The police officer responsible should be removed from the dog handling section and banned from owning a dog, thats what would happen to you or me and he should be treated no differently. A disgusting act of neglect from a supposedly professional officer.

Next up - man runs over small reptile in error: what was he thinking?

Hardly comparable, one is an accident the other is neglect of duty.

That will happen when MPs get sent down for fraud :(

it doesn't make any sense to leave them there.

People treat their dogs like 'pets' in the true meaning of the word, something that exists totally for their pleasure, they own it and put their enjoyment of it above the health and welfare of the animal. That's why you see so many overweight dogs, dogs bred to the detriment of their health and dogs dragged around cities and yes, left in hot cars.

Mutual respect is what's needed when you take on any animal, people should have to get a licence to keep ANY pet imo, and you should have to sit through basic some sort of basic education to get one.

Such compassion...

The moron who locked them there should get jailtime.

Depends entirely on circumstance.

What if, for example the officer responsible for the dogs pulled up at the station with them in the back, then as soon as he got out of the vehicle noticed a colleague struggling with a crim. He immediately went over to assist and in the struggle recieved a blow to the head and was knocked unconscious. An ambulance was called and he was sent off to hospital. In the middle of all this going on no-one else had the presence of mind to remember that his dogs were still in the van.

Still think the guy should be locked up once he wakes up in hospital and has the news broken to him that his companions are dead? This in entirely why an incident like this should be investigated before conclusions are drawn.

before conclusions are drawn.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how the totally preventable deaths of two police dogs could be justified by any other circumstances.

"The maximum sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is six months in prison and a £20,000 fine."

The policeman responsible will get nothing. NOTHING, and we all know it.

If this had happened to a normal citizen, they'd be fined a fortune and have NSPCA on their
backs.
But the police, who were obviously totally careless and negligent will get nothing.
The police are meant to serve us, not be "masters" and they seem to have their duties all messed up generally.
Anyway, this was ridiculous and could easily have been avoided, if only they were responsible.

Ok maybe I am speculating a bit, but your hypothetical is incredibly far fetched and unlikely.

I will await his excuse. I imagine if it's a rubbish one, the police dept will fabricate a story to save face for PR purposes.

Ofcourse I am sure it was not intentional, but the punishment for his ineptitude should be more severe than a slapped wrist and a weeks suspension which will probably be the case from our legal system..

Dog vans can be left switched on with no keys in, to keep the air con and fans going when the handler is not there. Could be that this mechanism broke.

I doubt the handler 'forgot' about his dogs

This happens every time we get a spot of hot weather. Not usually police dogs, but normal pet dogs. It boggles the mind how someone with half a brain or an ounce of compassion could leave a dog to roast in a car like that.
