I told you Alfas were a load of !*&#*

In nine years of car ownership in this country, I've never had any of that list done on any of my cars.

Then you have been most fortunate. A cracked windscreen can happen to any car at any point in it's life. Clutches are like brakes and tyres, items with a finite life that will have to be replaced at some stage. A timing belt is a service item, if you did 85k on the original belt in your polo you were living on borrowed time.

It wasnt done by AutoDelta themselves then?

I'd love a GTA - I remember seeing the 156 at the scottish motor show when it came out and I was 13, I wanted one ever since. Bought a 2.5 Lusso but the opportunity to buy my own place because of a promotion meant I had to sell it for something sensible :(

I believe it was an AD car, so not sure why the work was so bad, unless its been botched by another garage. AD's work is to a very, very high standard as I myself know - but then it should be, considering what they charge.

And everyone knows Alfa's need extra TLC. I will admit that while parts aren't that expensive, they don't last quite as long as their German counterparts. 40k is a big milestone for 147/156's especially, as lots of parts really are due for replacement by then.

That would be why.

Servicing makes do difference to when a clutch will wear out, suspension will wear out etc. Servicing just checks for wear - it doesn't replace a worn part.

A car with FSH can still have a tone of stuff wrong with it if the owner has elected not to change parts identified in need of replacement at the time of service.

About the only things that get changed at a service are oil + filter, air filter, leads, plugs, brake fluid and cambelts (if it's a major service).

Although if you replace a worn part at service you may stop further damage being done - i.e. worn track rod ends replaced will stop tyres wearing unevenly.

Worn service items on the engine can break things like the lambda probe.

Bad alignment/dampers can accelerate wear of bushes etc.

All items which *should* be checked on the service schedule of an Alfa.
