I've been looking for a new screen to replace my 19" HP L1906 (4:3) and just had a moment of madness and hit the button on a Dell S2409W for £180.

Does anyone else here have one of these 24" Dells? Most if not all the reviews I have read say it is a nice piece of kit.

Wouldn't touch one with a bargepole, you obviously didnt read anything about it before you bought it then...

LOL That's a bit harsh.

It's a TN panel, many people don't like the TN panels because of poor viewing angles and colour reproduction. The quality 24in monitors start at ~£400, and you can spend as much as £1500 on some. If your not into photo/video editing, you should find it fairly good to use, and the extra desktop space and higher resoloutions will be a big step up from your 19" HP.

Can you clarify the bad points please? All I have seen is that it has a relativley small viewing angle. Big woop, if I am not right in front of my PC I really don't want to see whats on screen...

It's all horses for courses, with panel types

* TN panels do not offer particulary good viewing angles, in general - sounds like this is not relevant to you and your use
* TN panels do not offer particularly accurate colour representation - for gaming, this may not be such an issue
* TN panels do not generally have sufficient colour-depth (usually 6-bit) to display full/wide gamut
* TN panels are almost always faster, in response time terms
* TN panels are considerably cheaper :)

I certainly would not say they are poor, just different price/market/usage - you pays your money and makes your choices. TBH, I suspect this is a nice upgrade to your current monitor, and you would likely not do *better* without spending circa. double :p

If your seriously gaming - rather than the person who plays WoW or Sim3 - then really you don't have much choice its TN or spending hundreds or even thousands as most of the non-TN panels that are truly suitable for gaming are not cheap.

Viewing angles are the main problem - even on my new samsung which has generous angles for a TN there is some slight darkening if my eyes are outside the bezel rather than the middle (but no color shift like cheaper TNs :) ) color accuracy isn't a problem unless you do high end media/image work - and then you'd want to calibrate the display, etc. anyhow and buy a panel that specifically was good for that useage.

My TN panel has 8bit color processing and would be suited to photo work with calibration - but thats not the norm.

Cool thanks guys. I though GinG's remarks were a bit harsh... PMT maybe?

I DID check out reviews before hand, as I said, all reviews said the same. Good value panel, good colours, good responce time, good brightness but poor viewing angle. I do game quite a bit, time allowing, but reviews said it was good for gaming too. Was only looking for the opinion of someone who may own or have owned one. I trust the opinions on this forum more than any other.

I am not a designer or Mac obsessive so I think I can live with this screen. Bear in mind that my currnent HP is designed for corperate enviroments. It is "ok" for my uses as it is. The viewing angle on it is very small, it doesn't bother me though. I don't play CSS standing up lol ;)

If you are going to use it with more than 1 input, Send it back, seriously.

There is a 5 to 10 second delay in the sound coming though when swapping to HDMI.

Something to do with the power saving that you cannot turn off.

I had one, took quite a mission to get a refund from them as they wouldnt admit it was a factory fault.

LOL...nah was only messing, I am using a TN panel now and find it completely fine :)

Just enjoy what you bought and get a better gfx card to play games at the res :)

Sorry for sounding daft, what do you mean 1 input? Like either DVI or HDMI but not both?

Just an update, the monitor arrived today (ordered yesterday at 3.45pm!) at work so have it hooked up to test. I have to say it is even better than expected.

Had a look at loads of high res images and it is very very good. My work PC hasn't the guts for HD video so I'll have to wait til I get home to test.

I just stumbled on this monitor as well and had a question! I play FSX a lot. I have a Core i7 920 @ 2.67Ghz, 3GB DDR3 RAM & HD4870 1GB.

Will I be able to play FSX at this monitors native res?

Thanks guys :)

Why do people have such a thing about bad viewing angles? In what situation does it really matter. I'm seriously interested :P

If you're watching movies or playing games sitting on a bed/sofa rather than sitting at your desk, particularly if there's more thana one of you there.

My work has just got 6 of these in for us on IT Support (except me, i managed to bag the 2408WFP that we got in for testing!! :D) and i have to say i was pleasantly surprised. The viewing angles aren't that bad for TN and the colour degredation isn't as bad as i was expecting. For the money it should make a reasonable budget gaming screen.
