Car advice - ford focus

Well I wasnt going to let the thread reach 20 posts without the mondeo suggestion :D

You could always suggest a Fiesta if you like?

Liking the new sig - I've got that on a canvas print in my lounge :D

Haha hell no, not really suited to that mileage :)

Well I'm guessing it isn't my Fiesta as I'd be a bit worried and I doubt it's the broken BMWs so tell me the album cover my space sig is from and you'll win 50 internet points :p

The TDDI isnt too bad - fine if you're cruising, got enough pulling power at motorway speeds and has the benefit of being pretty bulletproof compared to the TDCI

Wasnt suggesting that car in particular as I have no idea where the OP is, just suggesting something similar might appeal

Oh damn you with your rotating sig, you've made me look weird.

I dont recall ever seeing it on an album cover...

Do people think the above Mondeos would be a good car for a 100 mile round trip commute?

I am definately tending towards a diesel after driving a mates diesel golf today and hardly seeing the petrol dial move :p...

I can probably push up to 1500 but no more as I really need to buy a house asap :p

You wouldn't see a petrol gauge move much in a diesel car :p

Someone mentioned buy a car with MOT and it won't give you problems, not true, an MOT is a test of road worthiness. You can have a car with a fresh MOT and it can still be a wreck.

Yeah very true - I do understand that :o

I'm not much for the old shape mondeos, but the above ones look pretty decent and may be a much more comfortable drive.

The mk3 is a fine car, and becoming a bit of a bargain. Someone around these parts picked up a 1.8 for something stupid like 800 quid with 80k miles on it!

I've got one myself, although mines a bit newer and lower mileage than you'll be looking at, its a 2004 Zetec-S TDCi. At 50k miles I had the inevitable dual mass flywheel failure which cost 650 quid to sort. If you're looking at high mileage TDCis, just make sure its already been done and you'll be ok. Listen for any rattling at idle, if it sounds like a bag of spanners then walk away. Other signs are a squealing clutch or problems starting.

All mk3s have a DMF but only the diesels are prone to premature failure due to the torque. A lot of people will talk about injector problems but thats not nearly as widespread as you'd have thought. The signs to spot it are a plume of smoke on starting after the car's been standing overnight and a the car going into limp mode (especially if you push it towards the red line). The TDDI doesnt have this problem.

Other than my flywheel issue and a performance problem that turned out to be nothing more than a blocked air filter, mine hasnt missed a beat. Parts and servicing are cheap, the build quality is a mile away from the older cars and the 130 TDCi makes an effortless cruise and can still pull the skin off a rice pudding.

All I would say is avoid the "sportier" Zetec-S and ST ones if you're after a cruiser, they're a bit hard and crashy. Although an ST (and to some extent a ZS) for 1.5k is unlikely :)
