VW Golf Mk4 51 Reg - Knocking Sound

I own the above car, have done approx 123k miles since buying it 2nd hand, 4 years ago this august.

I do not service the car at the main dealer, but I change the oil, oil filter and air filter every 6 months.

I recently had the air con pump changed, cam belt, front and rear disks and pads. and only 3 weeks ago the rear exhaust including the cat was changed. all the ignition coils have been changed.

For several months now I have noticed a knocking sound when I break. I do not know what the sound is or where it is coming from.

Any kind of braking, brings on this knocking sound.

Anyone with a golf had a similar experience?
 
Anti roll bar bushes i suspect.
find a safe bit of road, swerve from left to right, you should hear it knock each time you turn. You shouldnt need to drive that fast.

i looked at the prices of bushes and they look pretty cheap.

i will try changing them.
 
mines got a horrible knocking similar to this, when I go over cracks or ripples in the road. can feel it through the floor pan. I took it to kwick fit and they were like naffin wrong wiv that mate. well there obviously is so I'm borrowing a jack and some jackstands to have a look for myself!

Aye another vote for front wishbone bushes, you'll notice it more under braking due to weight shift.

I have a Golf too and no noises but theres a bit of play when I've had it up on the ramps so will change next year as a precaution, got powerflex back bushes on already :)
 
I still can't figure out why my golf screams when turning left. Had both front wheels off and nothing looks odd. Going to replace the discs to see if that solves it as its getting worse, happens when going straight too :(
 
got mine booked into PSi tuning on thursday for the bush replacement, might get the back ones done if they are cheap enough. aren't they really big?

I've got them on mine (poly bushes @ the rear) bit stiffer but not too bad :) It's lowered anyway mind.

Collisster, are you from Blythe as in Blythe Bridge with you using PSI? :)
 
cool man I'll look out for you, saw a bora on the A34 towards newcastle tonight in exactly the same colour :) mines black btw if I randomly toot at you!
Its going into PSi for wishbone and ARB bushes might get rear beam done at the same time unless its simple to do yourself?
 
Couldn't tell you, previous owner did mine lol :) Cool never seen a Bora in cosmic green!

How much are they charging you mate if you don't mind me asking? As I'll want my fronts doing next year :)
