I know it's a stupidly open-ended question, but i'm looking for ideas for somewhere to take the GF for my birthday meal out in London. She's just started work in London so we're meeting up after work. We both know a couple of places, but i'm looking for somewhere new.

I'm open to any suggestions really, but preferably good British, Italian or French would be nice. Had enough Thai / Indian recently!

Don't really mind about price, but want to avoid anywhere too pretentious as we'd like to relax rather than feel like we're not welcome or being rushed out so they can fit the next booking in.

Location wise, preferably near Piccadilly & Mayfair? Ta :)

Can highly recommend this place, not center center. But easily reachable

Good prices and greta wine. Make sure you ask the head Sommelier. He is out standing and can recommend for any price budget they have.

going back there next week. As we couldn't get a booking for the Benares- Atul Kocha

Rhodes W1 Brasserie @ The Cumberland Hotel, Mayfair (Marble Arch).
Relaxed but very stylish Brasserie, serving up non pretentious food, such as Fish and Chips, Sausages & Mash.
Went there for my Birthday a couple of years back and it was really good, excellent for a drink before and after the meal, plus for this kind of place the cost wasn't too bad.

Went to Marco's (Stamford Bridge) last year and that was very good as well, food was slightly more 'Fine Dining' and the cost was a bit higher.

I went to The Greenhouse in Mayfair a short while ago, very, very nice. Not sure what your budget is, but it's rather expensive there.

There's also Rhodes 24 which is pretty central.

I know you said you've had enough Indian, but Tamarind is my favourite Indian restaurant and really is amazing, they actually have a two for one offer on for the Sunday lunch tasting menus, which makes it very reasonably priced.

Ok so it is a curry place, but I really like Veeraswamy - btter than the usual brown gloop, and the curried pineapple is delicious!

Also check out Amaya. It's a sister restaraunt of Veeraswamy. It's indian, but more kebabs than curries. Sharing idea etc. but very good food. Highly recommended.

There's also Tamarai in holborn. It's a fusion type of place so mostly Asian food. So you'l find a mix of indian, thai, chinese etc. The carmelized prawns are especially good. Also, it turns into a club on fridays and saturdays at about 11 so if you wanna do that, might be a good idea. (though i've only been there for the food with parents etc.)

Maybe I got unlucky but I had a bad experience there. Just didn't care much for the food and went there after hearing a lot of good things about it.

Duck vindaloo = NOM x 1x10^eleventy

Clos Maggiore is supposed to be lovely. Tried to take the mrs there but forgot about the name and when I remembered (on the day) they were fully booked.

Matsuri in St James/Holborn is very nice too, but to get the best you can't skimp out here. A £50+ set menu at the minimum for something awesome, and go for the teppanyaki and marvel at the knife and cooking skills of the chefs.

Will have to try it and compare to Veeraswamy, well, when I get a pay rise :D

Seconded, great food, Michelin star as well :)

Or about my current favourite meal in London, the tasting menu at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon on West Street. Try and eat in the bar though as I find the main restaurant a bit full on.
