I'm toying with the idea of a private number plate along with my new car purchase. (When I say new, I mean I'd be the first registered keeper.. woo!). The car will be a 59 plate and delivered in September so..

  • Do i stick with the original 59 plate so everyone knows I've got a brand spanking new car
  • Do I register a 59 plate BUT have it such that it spells something related to the car (i.e. if it was BMW have the last 3 letters spell BMW)
  • I like the idea of a private plate but not wanting something silly, I'd probably go for something with as few letters and/or numbers as possible but without breaking the bank!

Budget = £1500 absolute tops!

Decisions, decisions - what would you do?

PS. I'd rather not say what car it is yet, we can play the car guessing game in a later thread. RRP ~£40K

PPS. Delivery ETC early to mid Sept I've been told :)

How can we suggest something related to the car if you're not going to tell us what it is?

You know the price so that should give you an idea of its class (maybe!); I'm not getting any younger so nothing outrageous or silly and I don't want to mess about with non DVLA approved spacing/fonts/alterations. :)

Just leave the standard plate. The only kind of cars that should have private plates are supercars, and then it should be something like "CYA" or "BY3" :)

Spend the £1500 on some options like Satnav or something which will help at resale.

£1500? Come on, you could buy another car for that.

Either:

Load it up with £1500 of extras
buy a new computer, a massive stereo, a huge telly
buy a big mountain of drugs and whores

Any of those things would actually get you some pleasure out of your £1500, not just the knowledge that everyone thinks you're a smug rich ****

When I see private plates, I don't think smug rich ****.

I generally think smug ****.

Also its amazing how many private plates are on absolutely crap cars. Probably into the realms of plate cost > car cost!

Everybody knows how easy and cheap it is to get a non-standard-issue plate these days so why would you think that?

Me, I've got a private plate on my car, I got it cause it only cost me 250, why did I get it? Cause I could and the plate means something to me, I personally couldn't give a stuff if others think I'm a cupid stunt and don't give other drivers with private plate a second thought. :)

I know what you mean about your later comment but again it's simply due to cheapness.
