*OVERCLOCKED* Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz @ 4.00GHz + Free Game

wooohoo it shipped - now here's hoping I don't **** up with the thermal compound

I am worried about the thermal compound for mine, Last time I just banged loads on the CPU and put the fan on top but with this beast I think I am going to have to be careful, do I need to use the whole tube of the stuff I get?

I've just built my system up with the bundle I received today.

When fitting the Fenrir I applied the supplied paste to the bottom of the cooler and worked it into the grooves using a credit card. Then I applied 3 lines more of the paste to the three ridges of the cooler block, mounted it on the CPU and gave it a wiggle.

Temps are 40° on idle at the minute, haven't had a chance to stress it yet.

One thing I did do was mount the cooler 90 degrees clockwise, blowing air up and out my Coolermanster RC1000 case. Seemed more logical than blowing it at the back of the case.

Currently re-installing Windows 7 64-bit RC1 as I dropped a clanger with my primary partition size the first time.

I would say, the machine I am typing this on is a 4400 x2 64. The new kit is blazingly fast in comparison.

considering this bundle but i am wondering whether getting some better 16000 memory is going to give extra benefit?

also might watercool it but cant decide whether the HAF932 or the Cosmos S "Sport" is the better case

There's no such thing as a "bad" cpu, they are all the same. you are no more or less likely to get better results. I would lay money on the fact that if I bought 100 i7 920's with say 20 each from each major etailer every single one would hit 3.8ghz. I'd be confident that with a quality psu / mobo / ram / cooler they'd all do 4.0 +

lies - multiple lies

i have now overclocked over 500 i7 920 chips, more than 350 of these being D0 stepping

out of every 15-20 i clock there is always one chip that WILL NOT go past the 3.6 - 3.8 mark

im not saying it is a bad chip - an i7 at 23.6 is still rapid

but they dont ALL do 4ghz

Ok then for arguments sake let's say you bought the parts separately with the improved noctua cooler for £497 would it then be a worthy contender to paying £569 for a 3.8 bundle with an inferior cooler ? bare in mind 3.8 would be considered very very achievable but you have the option of then going for 4.2 yourself increasing the saving further ?

let's face it the additional £245 saved could effectively buy an Ati 4870X2 to go alongside the i7 kit

the noctua is not the best i7 air cooler
this is a massive misconception
sure it is well made and looks great

i have spent many hours testing this bundle - to the point where i hate seeing gigabyte UD5's

the noctua cooler simply cannot cope with the heat output of an i7 chip at 4ghz at 100% load for extended periods of time

the titan fenrir is much better [when mounted correctly] and although louder and cheaper, it holds its own

for the 4.2 Bundle, the customer gets the top of the range Prolimatech Megahalems CPU cooler
it is a beast of a cooler that holds the extra load perfectly - it is simply the best air cooler on the market right now
HANDS DOWN

the customer pays the extra - for three things
  1. a chip that has been tested at 4.2 for 24 hours
  2. a massivly uprated cooling solution
  3. my extra time and effort in testing

you may not see this as worthwhile
but this is a premium service that myself and Yewen have worked hard to offer OcUK customers so that we can offer the best

we dont get many chips that will do 4.2 on air at safe temperatures
the price reflects this

no competitor offers anything close

beware of the terrible titan fenrir soaring temperature to unbelieve 90C or over !!! I had throw my titan fenrir in the skip as it load of rubbish cpu cooler, the worse I ever seen in my life.

you did not fit it using the supplied mouting hardware

this is why you had problems

the titan fenrir is quite clearly not terrible

as stated before 90'c is within the limits of the chip

Just ordered the 3.8 bundle myself, can't wait!

was meaning to ask, what happens to the chips that do fail? Hoping that the 3.8 chip I receive won't simply be a failed 4.0/4.2.

each bundle gets built and put into a box

if it reaches 3.8 it goes in the 3.8 pile
4ghz into the 4ghz pile

then they get assigned to customers based on demand

chips with low stock volts instantly get put to 4.2 and the cooler is changed to the megahalem

we get very very few failed chips

Just sent a query about a system build via the webnotes thing. what kind of voltage re they needing to get 4.2 stable? i.e. is it the kind of voltage thatll kill it in a year or so? Im looking for this thing to last 2-3 years. If the chip dies after a year when these things arent aviailable anymore ill end up having to rebuild the system again.

Also I have a corsair 620w psu, would this power the bundle, plus 1x velocirator, 1x BDRW drive, 1x gtx295 and the usual case fans?

planning on ordering the 4.2 and then watercooling it so I know i have the best chip and can run it very quietly at that speed.

also wondering if i can get the extreme version of the mb instead of the UD5, as i believe it comes with a SB waterblock? although from what i read it may not need it anyway?

hmm was considering buying an over clocked bundle but then might buy the parts and find the time to do it myself;) anyway to the my point, you have a competitor that i found whilst i was 'researching' my next upgrades that is offering the 4.2 bundle for under £580:eek:. Now i know the cpu and ram is different from the ones you have choosen rjkoneill but thats a huge difference in price:confused:

Now i know i cant name them but they have laughed a little at your prices (sorry to stir) ive gotta ask cos' their offer seems to good to be true and yours seems too much why the big price difference?

P.s sorry if this is breaking any rules with the stirring part:rolleyes:

Any good guides on this - just got my bundle today (thanks very much :)) and want to make sure I get a good mount...

Got the bundle today and set it up but it didn't come with the USB stick with the programs and instructions. What should I be using to test out the temperature etc

I think i put WAY to much paste on mine, haha...

Still building the system... trying to find the best way to secure the SSD disks!
