Evening :)

It's coming to the end of our tenancy and I just remembered that we had broken two slats on our bed earlier in the year and they need replacing.

Does anyone have some advice on where I can find this sort of wood cheaply and quickly Ideally within the week)?

I did a quick google for timber merchants but I'm not sure what to expect at these sort of places, will they stock the wood I'm after at the right size? I don't have any tools to re-size it if it's too big.

Thanks in advance

Yep our local B&Q cuts wood in store if you take the measurements in. It's a B&Q 'superstore' though, in Slough so if you're in West London then it's just a jaunt down the M4.

That's great, thanks for the speedy advice. I live in East London so will take a trip to Leyton tomorrow morning with the one part of wood I have left :D

Landlord is coming around tomorrow, so if I get it before 12 I might save some awkwardness.

How did you break them? Was it the obvious? :P

No interesting story behind it I'm afraid, I'm just a bit of a lump and decided to jump into bed knees first.

I thought about re-spacing the remaining slats out but it may be a bit noticeable, if you sit at the end of the bed there is a very obvious dip.

Just leave the one remaining slat in the middle with the mattress perched on top (great escape style) and wait for him to jump on top
:D

Stumped,

Leyton store doesn't have a "cutting licence", and he suggested Chingford which is over an hour away by public transport :(

Any other suggestions? Called a few timber merchants but they're closed right now.

Do you really not own a saw? Just buy a length of the required wood, you should be able to buy a sensible length of say 6 foot.

You can buy a cheap hacksaw for a few squids, measure, mark and cut. Be a man ;)

Ant

Don't own a saw but heading to the in-laws tomorrow in west London, there is a Wickes not far and they must have a saw in the shed. Fingers crossed.

What's a man? :D

Been a very long time since I had a go at any sort of DIY, short of painting a wall.

What area of East London are you in?

I'm pretty sure there's a little DIY store / Timber Yard close to the Barclays bank (near Sainsburys) in Whitechapel.

Bow, so not very far from Whitechapel. It's worth a punt.

do they go into that much depth at the march out?

Just trying to limit the deductions on the deposit, we have already damaged one of the floorboards quite badly from wear and tear with the dining chair moving over it, gradually it got worse and then I took the biscuit by pulling at a little bit hanging off. Oops.

does it really have to be the exact size? ive repaired a few beds just with a bit of 25x75mm PAR timber. tbh i dont think i have ever seen a piece of timber in our yard which is exactly the same size as a bed slat.

depending on where u go and how anal the employees are they might plane a piece down for free so its worth a punt but if not id stick with the above tbh

Not really, I can probably get hold of a saw to cut it.

Each slat is 12x2x138cm

The girl at Wickes said they do 12mmx32mmx2.1m but she couldn't understand me properly so it was tough to find out if they had what I was looking for.

Timber yard sounds like the best bet, do I just turn up and hunt for the wood myself, or are they likely to help if I show them the remaining piece I have and give them the measurements?

either take the piece in or just right down the size. 25x125 par will finish about the size your looking for.

if u go to a jewsons depot. afaik you should just be able to collar one of the yard guys get them to select the piece of timber for you. but go with them and try and find a piece with as few knots as possible. you will be charged for a 1.5 or a 1.8mtr length but im sure they will cut it to the exact length for you.

go to a timber merchants with the measurements and they will do the size your after, they should only charge you for what you take, maybe a little extra for planed all round (par) as you'll need 5x2. timber usually comes in 2.4 3.6 or 4.8m lengths
