They do sometime like to go out with a bang, my Enermax PSU did this Dec 07, using the pc next minute a big bang and a flash in the corner of my eye.

I ve had a powersupply go, turned PC on it turned stright off, truned it on again loads off sparks and smoke :P and it triped the mains electrics out as well :P

A similar thing happened to me a couple of years back - Corsair 520, Gigabyte DS3. I'd just put the rig together, tried to power up, nothing happened. Checked all the connections and tried to power up again. This time there was a loud bang from the motherboard area and lots of acrid smoke from near the 24-pin connector. Crapped myself and wrenched the power lead out.

I was certain the thing was dead, especially as there was a nasty burn mark on the back of the mobo, but I took it all out of the case and built it up on my desk, plugging in my old OCZ PSU. To my amazement, the system booted up normally. Tried again with the Corsair PSU and it booted again. Stuck it all back in the case and had no further problems.

Never did figure out what caused it, although the mobo did randomly die a year later. Seemed like something on the mobo had shorted out. It's even more strange if your rig's been running for a year.

I had an Antec PSU do that. Bang, didn't see the flash (but I'm sure there was one), monitor, router and another PC go dead as well.

I got the other hardware going again (it'd shorted my UPS and tripped out the breaker on that), but the PSU was finished. Opened it up and discovered a hole in the side of a rather large capacitor.

I'd still rather that than a fire. There's an awful lot of wood (desks) around here.
