Disc Drive problem solved, now the matter of my HDD

Hi,

From earlier last week my Disc drive became faulty so I sent it to Microsoft for repair. Got it back yesterday and was just about to play some FO3 on it, I bought the DLC broken steel on my PC earlier and queued it to my XBOX and was really looking forward to that.

However, the morons at microsoft, formatted my HDD of all my game saves. I knew it didn't look good when I had to recover my gamer tag. So literally all the games I've played the last 6 months were for nothing because I can't go back to them.

Oh sure I can redownload my DLC, however games like FO3, GTAV, GEARS 1&2 I'll have to start all over again!

Is there any advice for me or the slight chance they thought of backing up my HDD before formatting it?

THANKS M$

I'm 99.99% sure that they tell you explicitly not to send it off with any accessories in case they get lost during the repair process.

My guess is that happened, and they gave you a new one. If the instructions said not to pack it, I can't see it being Microsoft's fault.

Frankly I wouldn't have left it connected anyway, the problem was with the DVD drive, not the hard drive.

The HDD is part of the console, they really didn't make that clear. Let's face it, it's not like I left a disc in the console. Also the HDD is the same because it had the same 3 scratches from before.

Right, fair enough, it was my fault for sending it.

Is there anything I can do about it, also why did they format it if it can just be removed?

The morons at Microsoft? You sent the HDD back!! :p

And it's as much a part of the console as the power/AV leads and controllers. ;)

Think your gamesaves are gone tbh, DLC can be downloaded again though obviously.

^Please don't it's becoming more aparent what I've done. I honestly just didn't think that the HDD should be removed because it's "part" of the xbox.

Still there was no need to format the console, why why why did they do it? Couldn't they (out of good will) remove the HDD when they received it then sent it back with the console, that's like 5 seconds of additional work.

It's not part of the console. It's a removable and upgradable accessory. The instructions seem to be clear enough that everyone else noticed it. Are you sure you read them? ;)

I find it very unlikely that they wiped it for the hell of it, more likely that it was removed for the maintenance, then when they went to reattach it they weren't entirely sure if it was the one supplied with it. I don't think they'd attach a random HDD to a console and return it without being sure that there was no private information on it, only way to ensure that would be to wipe it.

I'd put it down to experience, and get back to work on all your games! Just be glad you only lost 20 games worth of saves, not 100s. ;)

I'm sure they'd probably wipe it just as a matter of ruling out any issues. Who knows if something you've downloaded or a save game file may be corrupt? They might wipe it just to eliminate any potential issues so you get your Xbox back just the same as it would be if you bought a brand new one. (My theory.)

There's about as much chance of them backing it up as there is me dumping out a golden nugget. Take a few hours to mourn all your saves, and learn from this experience. You will surely become a better man for it.

PS - It was a little silly to send your drive off to MS!
