new i7 build

So basically your saying there is very little performance between those two specs? Im not sure if I need all that hard drive space but ssd would run a lot faster? would i need to use raid0?

for gaming there isn't a lot in it. i7 is a few fps faster.
SSd will save you a load of loading, saving, installing time. You can buy just 1. Or for extra speed you can buy two and run in raid 0 or 1. 0 being the faster.

personally if I was planning on upgrading a lot I would go i7. If I was planning to run the system with few upgrades for a few years I would go Phenom2 due to the extras you can get. especially if you don't need so much HDD.

Thanks for your advice I will have to take it into consideration and have a think about it. I dont want to rushh into it abuy the wrong thing since im going to be spending a lot of money. As I said in my first post I do eventually plan to upgrade to a tripple monitor setup but both specs are more or less already setup for this its just getting the extra monitors.

If your going with Win 64, then no reason not to stick 8GB in there - i'd switch out the SSD for a hard disk and maybe pick a nicer case

Thanks again for the advice. I have tweaked your spec to my needs and now think its just a matter of choosing from the two systems below.

I7 Bundle:

Phenom:

Can anyone give any comparison for the 2 specs please?

Is anybody able to tell me which will be the quietest?

The phenom one should be faster with the 4890 CF and SSD. Also, it should be the quieter as there is no CPU fan. Other than that it will likely the GPU cooler that make the most noise (from what I hear both 4890 and 295 are quite noisy).

Are you sure you want the overclocked bundle? If you price up the components, you're basically paying £170 extra to get an OC which you could do pretty easily yourself with a bit of perseverance. You could get something nice like an SSD or a second monitor with that.

I had thought of that but I dont like the idea of overclocking it myself. if I did do that and got an ssd with the i7 package would that make it the better choice?

It's really up to you... on one hand, I can see the appeal of having OcUK do all the dirty work, and you'd be getting a guaranteed overclock. On the other hand, overclocking an i7 is pretty easy, and these forums are very helpful, and you'll learn something new.

It's price versus peace of mind really :)

I would have a go at doing it myself if its the best option. I am just trying to get the best system i can for my budget. I dont want to spend a fortune and then wish I had bought something completely different.

I think I am getting more and more swayed by the phenom build it seems to be more value for money and possibly faster? Just a few more questions sorry to be a pain.

Can the phenom build be easily overclocked?
Is Raid 0 and crossfire easy to setup as this bundle will require both to work?
Will I require any more case fans?
Does the package come with all cables and cpu paste?
as the ssd's ar 2.5" will I need a caddy or bracket to fit them into the case?
this case does not seem to have any 3.5" front bays can I still fit a 3.5" front bay device?

thanks again

Personally I wouldn't be getting the Phenom if I was spending £1500. It's good gear for the money and a very capable gaming chip, but the overclocked i7 should beat it out pretty handily if you do serious multitasking, especially if that involves any image or video work.

Well you got a nice budget...
And you are willing to spend so much on the bundle and gfx card???

Man lower the gfx card and buy separated i7 mobo and ram...

I am currently choosing a system from OcUk but i have a budget of 1400 (not much from yours but the difference is big for me ;) )

Anyways this is my kind of choice...comment if u like or not...

All im not sure is about mobo...will it overclock as good as The Gigabyte UD5?
Or at least go to 3GHz ? :D

Otherwise i think i am getting a good one and have a look at my Monitor....
It will be much better if you are gaming...What do you think boys???:p

EDIT: I got 55pounds delivery...i live in Malta

Nice monitor - but compared to b34st's spec you have the combination of a higher resolution and less graphics power, so your framerates are going to be quite a lot lower.

i really dont see the point in ssd.
I understand that this is a pc forum, and everyone likes to have the fastest and the most powerful. But you only save a matter of seconds. For that you lose hundreds of pounds.

My current i7 with samsung spinpoint loads windows in about 30-40 seconds... ssd would do it in what, 20-30? my eec with ssd takes about 20-30 to load xp so id guess it would be around that sort of speed.

So for about £150 more than a normal hdd, i save about 20 seconds of time when i boot the pc, and maybe the same when im loading photoshop etc. is that really worth it?

If your into the extreme end of gaming or graphics production then i understand that speed is needed, but for the average home user ssd is overkill for the pricxe at the moment, the money would be much better spent on other things.

with regards to the op, your processor etc should be based on what you ant to do with the machine. If your doing gaming, but your also doing graphics work and other intensive tasks then personally i would go with the i7.

My build cost me £800 without monitor.
Core i7 920
Asus P6T motherboard
6gb ocz gold ram
320gb spinpoint
antec 300 case
dark knight 4870 graphics
corsair 650w psu
fenrir cooler

i would point out that my build is quite noisy, but this is down to the fenrir fan and the case fans which im swapping them all for silent ones.

My spec is no beast, but i does graphics work fine and plays games fine. plus it has the options there for furture upgrades. If i could change anything i would have gone with a better motherboard and a different case.

I dont notice that things take a long time to load, i click to open photoshop and it loads in seconds, programs instal in seconds, and the whole machine feels rapid, was easy to overclock to around 4ghz as well but the fans have to be sped up a bit.

quick example build.
Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz £208.99

you may want to use bigger better more powerfull gpus in the future...dont skimp on your power supply i would go for the corsair 1000w to be future proof;)

Nice monitor - but compared to b34st's spec you have the combination of a higher resolution and less graphics power, so your framerates are going to be quite a lot lower.

Yes my framerates will be lower but later i can run them in crossfire/ot even better buy a Dx11 card in the near future, i won't need a gfx card like 295 series because it is too much overrated for me....

4980 will be good enough to run new games, maybe not on maxed out options, but i'll still be able to play it ok...

I'd rather spend my money on a future proof monitor than a gfx cards which are upgraded every 2-3 month lol:D

So if I buy seperates it works out cheaper, meaning I can upgrade a few other things but the only difference I have made is the motherboard:

seperates.jpg

The reason I have chosen these bits over some in other specs is as follows:

I7 vs Phenom: The main things I will be doing with this pc are web development and gameing, and later I could be doing some 3d rendering for python so from what people have said the i7 will be best suited for this.

GPU: Well im still unsure which to get here. I plan to get another 2 monitors in the future so with the current card I will need to get another. Do i just get 2 4890's now or keep it as it is and maybe get a lower card like a 275 later? or will this pull the 295 down? would I need to get another 295?

Monitor: I have gone for the Iiyama because it still has a high 1080p res, the reason I have gone 22" is because I will be getting another 2 in the future making 3 X 22" if I went 24" I would not have the space on my desk for them all.

HDD: A 1TB hdd is enough space for me and its a fast drive for now. I will probably get an ssd for my os later

Case: I was originally going to get the 902 but I heard that it can be a bit tight for space when you have large gfx cards in there and as I plan to eventually have 2 large gfx cards I figured the 1200 would be a safer bet.
