Follw us on Twitter

I registered to Twitter just to ask some questions to the o2 twitter page during the release of the iPhone 3G. Since then, I've had 20 random people follow me.

It's just another outlet for spam in my opinion.

Well seeing as how you can't see any of their upadtes on your homepage unless you follow them, I don't see the problem.

But you do get an email everytime someone follows you - now I know you turn the notifications off and not get the emails etc. etc. But if someone that never uses Twitter can get 20 followers, I bet people that use it everyday must get loads. And when someone follows you I bet you check them out to see what they're about - thus spammage.

I have 126 followers from quite a few months of use so i'd hardly call that very excessive.

Twitter is (IMO), just a glorified way of people showing an interest in peoples lives for no reason other than having nothing better to do with yours.

Now I don't want to cause offence to people on here who use it, but this is my opinion on some people who use it for following certain people.

How sad does your life have to be, to follow celebrities and friends every movement each time they update it? I tried it once, and really, all you get 90% of the time is just your friends with crap like "Just bought an ice cream, LOL". Why would you use this over Facebook, when FB has all the same features, plus more. Like for example, chat? Photos?

The fact that it has nothing other than status updates just seems...quite pathetic imo. Unless that OcUK one offers more than just company offers, it seems like quite a tedious thing to follow. You wouldn't watch a TV channel which was just adverts 24/7, so why use the internet for the same thing?

In the time that I've used it, I've discussed several events such as E3, Spurs matches etc, updated with a link to new blog posts and so gaining new readers, found info about Spurs from numerous sources, had a pretty indepth discussion about The I.T. Crowd and Black Books with Graham Linehan, recieved updates on subjects I'm interested in, and many more things.

Too many people compare it to Facebook, MySpace etc, when in reality, it has more in common with an old fashioned chat room.

As has been said by many people, Twitter is what you make of it.

Would be good if it was like:
'1:28pm: Just dropped box of gfx. Not sure if any were broken. Put back on shelf - wh00ps!'

But if its just whats in stock / whats on offer - I'll just use this website, where that information has always been?

You know, when I was reading your post I was instantly reminded of the short film called Truth in Advertising. It's readily available on YouTube in case you've not seen it before.

Twitter can be used very effectively and with a little insight into how it works, there is potential to dramatically increase awareness of the brand. One such company that I shan't name has done this recently by running competitions via twitter related to twittering their name as a hashtag and everyday for a week, one person who has done so wins a Macbook. Word gets around and soon everyone is twittering the name in hope of a macbook and thus the brand name gets spread massively.

If it's just going to be used to link to products - ie. product spam then it is a massive waste of potential.

Twitter can be a hugely powerful tool for marketing yet it is all too easy to waste that potential if you are lazy with it.

As for Twitter in general, its usefulness varies. Following random mates and other people will largely result in a page of pointless time wasting and spam. It can be very useful for keeping track of competing companies or networking amongst your field. A friend uses it for web development, keeping track of what work other people are putting out there and so on.

Twitter is something that requires input before you get output - if you just add mates and celebs, you'll just get drivel.

As I tried to get across in my post Skippi (Granted, not very well), it does have it's good sides if you follow things relevant to your interests, but I was more directing my post at Twitter's larger audience, those who just use it to follow friends and random celebrities, for no other reason than they can.

What you mentioned certainly is pretty cool, but how many people do you think on Twitter really use it for these things?

It's a free way of advertising the company in another way, It's a way of gripping onto a new fad which is doing the rounds. Twitter is extremely popular, so to have an OCUK twitter is surely a good marketing move?

It does have a large audience and the potential to lure in new customers but marketing is also about company image. Will associating with Facebook and Twitter help portray the right image ?

Very few, I know, but that's their issue, not Twitter itself which is why the "OMGz Twitter killed mah Mom" comments are not justified. I too used to use it how you have said when i first signed up and due to that, I ditched it after a week or two. Then, I started using it properly and it's pretty cool. I do still follow celebs, but only ones I am genuinely interested in.
