I'm not up on the latest hardware so I am looking for some advice. My brother in law has asked me to build him a pc for that can cope playing Crysis in a res of 1600x1200. A monitor is not required but a copy of vista is. The maximum budget is £500. I ran through a few options on overclockers and the cheapest I could do was £536, if someone can post their choices that would be great.

for OS I would recommend you to download Windows 7. It faster, better looking, brilliant, and free. Saves you from using Vista, something thankfully was problem free for me, but Windows 7 makes life so much easier, especially since most programs are going 64 bit now.

Thanks for the reply,

back in the day it used to be the CPU would give the bigger benefit in games, I know GPU's are now king, In the spec above would a Quad Core be a better option with a lower spec Graphics card?

Came up with this:

I would say stick with the build above, the gpu will give you what you need. Quad core cpu's aren't being used hugely in games right now, so you should be fine.

Not for gaming, i'd do as suggested and get Windows 7, the money saved could upgrade the CPU to a E8***

I would go for a dual core phenom II 550 due to AM3 but they also have very good performance in games for their price....near E8400 equivalent.

It will cost you about £540 though with Vista.(with a 4870 powercolor 1024mb as gfx card too.)

If you scrapped Vista and used Windows 7 you could use a 720 tri core with a 4890.

cheaper than the other one but it shows in the areas of GFX and case where it had to give way for the budget

just realised thos from the last post it is under budget if u swap the gfx to a 4870:D

This is nice, as said - take out the Windows, add a hard drive ( cheap as chips ) and download Windows 7.

I just got my new build (waiting on delivery) but saved my self £100 due to downloading windows 7 :)

Thanks for all the replies,

If I opt for Windows 7, this is only be ok til March next year, then it will have to be purchased. Also how stable is the RC release?

Without Vista this is what I have come up with.

£489.82

btw guys all people thinking about jumping on the win7 bandwagon for free think again

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-7-beta-rc-rtm,8172.html

so be careful where you source your copy best direct from microsoft:D

about the spec change the DVD drive to the 217 same price:D
and why not pay the extra 5£ for the 500Gb seagate:D
and a 400W PSU is on the edge for powering your system btw:D
the extra 37£ for the E7400 cpu isnt worth it tbh:D

windows 7 rc 7100 build that i'm running has been flawless and this is old compared to some on these and other forums are using

yes it's only good untill next year sometime but you can pre order win 7 for £50 and the best part is you can avoid the mess that is vista :D

for me, i had xp, for 2 years, had vista for a year, and now had windows 7 for 4 months. Without any doubt I find windows 7 to be lightyears better than vista, I would have no doubts about recommending it to anybody.

besides, in a years time the price will have come down quite a bit.
