Decent cheap cars..

If you're gonna be needing to regularly travel with 3 other people, I'd recommend saving a bit more and getting a Mondeo. It'll be worth it. I can just see you getting tired and cramped very quickly in such other small cars, where as the Mondeo is easily big enough for the same money-ish.

I have had me and 4 friends (1 of us is short, the other 4 over 6ft) in my micra and it is slower than anything and the brakes don't work well with all the weight, along with poor mpg. Not too mention how cramped it was.

Of course it can take 5 people when it NEEDS to, but it is not comfortable.

Fabia has been around since 2000 so it's likely. Avoid the 1.4MPI though. TDI or 16v are best.

The 1.4 is okay, I mean it's not a great engine but it compares reasonably to the other cars he considering - and it's an insurance group lower.

It's the old Skoda pushrod engine, and in emissions smothered form it could munch the head gasket. Cam chain rather than a belt tho, and it's no worse than the Anglia derived heaps that Ford have been recycling since the 60s. The VAG 16v is far nicer, just make sure the tensioners get changed with the cambelt. The later 1.2 12V is a little cracker, but likely out of budget. (The 1.2 6V is horribly slow).

heh i've got a 1.1 106 shed and i wouldn't inflict it on my worst enemy ;)

The main problem with the 106 is the inability of anyone with bigger than size 8 feet to drive it. Oh and it's made out of especially flimsy french tin.

the 206 is worse, but you get used to it, still get 3 wheel action with a low fuel tank :D

Really? I've driven both and the 106 seemed worse. 206 was about ten years after the 106 however. Offset steering wheel on the 206 was my main gripe, drove quite nicely with a 110 HDi in it.

This sort of car (cheap, cute etc) i guess i would go for a peugeot, 106/306 etc.

Ford KA and Fiesta are both vile, Corsa for £1800 will be vile too. Peugeot's all though a bit flimsy are at least tolerable to look at and be around. Should be reliable enough too and will appeal to a girl the most i would have thought.

I can't be bothered to take offence at the moment. Maybe in the morning :p

Probabaly gonna get burnt at the stake *dons flame proff jacket* what about a kia picanto, cheap to run and insure. Or even deowoo matiz, even cheaper to run and insure. Both of these are really cheap to insure, easy to drive and cheap as chips to run

Summon the Dragons and burn him with Fire!! :p

On the plus side, they're old man/lady cars and hardly chavtastic, so yeah insurance should be cheap. Just don't get one if you're planning on doing much motorway driving..

Peugeot 306 with the 1.9td engine - some space, a diesel so the learner doesn't stall it so much, don't think that much goes wrong with them other than a friend's had the odd electrical strop.

Rover 214/25 is another option - insurance isn't bad, its comfier than anything Corsa/Fiesta sized really, and its got enough space for 4 adults (its only 5 where it becomes a push).

Well in the end got a Focus 1.6 Ghia with a few small issues (all fixed now [starter motor and alternator]) for £1000 bit slow however insurance is only £560 so not too bad over all!

Two of my girl friends have bought a grand to 1500 quids worth of Focus recently, Both Black with alloys & all the bits. Lot of car for the money & they go pretty well an all.
Where's the pics ?

306 Derv.

Really cheap to run for me, insurance is less than pretty much ANY petrol similar sized hatchback.

Only downside is the driving position is crap if your over 6ft!
