Hi all - just throwing this out there - going to Southport for a week tomorrow, anything worth seeing in particular while I'm there ? Kids attractions or exhibitions or anything really. Will have the car so Liverpool, Walsall etc not out of the question....

Cheers!

Walsall? That's nowhere near mate.

Used to be a pleasure beach in Southport, dunno if it's still there. Not great anyway.

Beach is huge, I remember going for donkey rides along the beach when I was a nipper.

Can't think of anything specific in Southport. Beach, pleasureland and parks spring to mind. A bit further afield is Marten Mere (a bird sanctuary), Camelot (kiddies theme park), Livrpool for Beatles, museums, art galleries and shopping.

Sorry to say but there is very very little to do in Southport. The pleasure beach was closed last year. ****** have moved in and set their own funfair up there though if you fancy risking it :D. Plenty of the usual arcades and a decent swimming pool with water slides too though.

There is a bowling alley, cinema complex etc but literally no more than one days worth of things to do in Southport for the little ones. Few good restaurants though, can recommend Fuegos for Mexican, The Swan for Fish and Chips, Grand Palace for a uber cheap but tasty Chinese and Casa Italia for..well duh! Also, the Italian next to the cinema is entering the Guiness Book of Records for Worlds Hottest Pizza if you fancy some of that. Bistro Verite in Birkdale is also getting some good reviews too..

http://www.visitsouthport.com/ should tell you whats on at the time you are there.

Drive down to Liverpool or up to Blackpool for plenty to do though

I live in Southport and Youstolemyname is pretty much spot on. It's a nice enough town, and certainly not as raucous as Blackpool etc (which is still within driving distance btw!) but decidedly on the quieter side for things to do. You'll enjoy town, Lord Street and Pleasureland (not the Pleasure Beach - different thing) for a while anyway. Plenty to see and do within driving distance once you get itchy feet :)

:(

Southport is a strange place, there isn't really actually anything here anymore, yet it's a "classic" resort in that it's full of classic old people.

Aye, its a crying shame how Southport has really self distructed. In it's heyday it was a great British seaside resort with the Model Village, Two Funfairs, Minature Railway, Boating Lakes etc

As times have changed and more and more people are going abroad for their holidays the resort never really modernised to attract and retain people. The icing on the cake was the non-completion of the casino on the front which is prime real estate and just sitting empty now.

Clubs like the Kingsway and the old Palm Court/Manhattens/whatever its called this week are sitting like eyesores on the prom.

True shame as it could be lovely. Hopefully when we get out of the credit crunch the place will take off again...

But yes, if you play golf you have several championship courses within 30 mins drive.

Take your binoculars, and if you are a good boy you might be able to see the sea.

Albeit about 6 miles out.

I love Southport, it has a bit of class compared to Blackpool, I loved going to the funfair at Southport, cant believe it has gone, went last year and just went around the shops and to the arcade with the merry-go-round outside, my niece loved it but it was dated plus they had a massive walk way to a shopping centre but we never went across it looked like a huge walk. I heard its a decent night out in terms of pubs and clubs.

If you are into bird watching then head out to Martin Mere. Get the Northern Line Train into Liverpool, it saves you finding somewhere to park,

It is a place old people go to die. It has a pensive atmosphere, like they are waiting to see which member of the bridge club is going to shuffle off their mortal coil next.
