Hi,

I've recently changed from a Q9550 to a Q9650 (got it fairly cheap) as my Q9550 was a C1 and was quite a hot runner. Anyway, I'm currently using a lapped TRUE Black in push-pull to cool the Q9650 which is giving me reasonable temperatures (50-55c ish under load). So why am I creating this thread? Well, my only concern is that since I've had the TRUE, I have been using the mounting bracket from a Thermalright Ultima 90i, as the bracket that comes with the TRUE is useless at putting any pressure down on the base of the cooler. Now I'm wondering if the bracket from the Ultima 90i is putting enough pressure down on the TRUE as its not really designed for it. This leads me on to whether I should purchase a Megahalems as this seems to be a good cooler with what seems a very good mounting system. What do you guys think?

Use the TRUE mount but put a penny or a washer under mounting bracket - this gives extra pressure when the screws are fully tightened. The Megahalems is marginally better than the TRUE black at cooling - but for the extra cost it would make more sense to mod the TRUE bracket than buy a new cooler.

I did try the washer mod when I got the TRUE but it was still very easy to rotate the cooler on the CPU. Got frustrated with it in the end hence why I used the bracket from the Ultima 90i.

Just a quick question, do OcUK stock the fan clips for the Prolimatech? I've seen them mentioned but can't find them on the site.

They do but they've not been put up yet.

rjkoneill said he's finding the stock code so people can order it before it's actually up on the site. (I think)!

So say I ordered the Prolimatech and went and picked it up from the store (as I'm not far away from it), I should be able to purchase some when I get there? Sorry its a little off topic.

Well I picked up the Prolimatech and the extra fan clips from the shop this afternoon. Shop was a little difficult to find as there's only a small sign in the window of the building. Not easy to see from the main road in the business park. Anyway, I've finished fitting it and it was probably the easiest cooler to fit that I've had. It puts a lot more pressure down on the base of the cooler, thanks to the excellent mounting system. The best bit is that its reduced my load temps a good few degrees c. With the TRUE I was getting load temps of 57-55-55-55 (unfortunately no screenshot to show), using the Prime95 blend test for 30mins. With the Prolimatech I'm getting load temps of 53-51-48-48 using the Prime95 blend test for 30mins. Both coolers were/are using Noctua P12's in push-pull with MX2 paste.

Now whether that is due to the Prolimatech being better than the TRUE or its just putting more pressure down than the alternative method I was using for the TRUE, so that its making better contact, I don't know. Make of it what you will.

Could possibly be the mounting system, i have a TRUE black on a q9550, load temps of 54-51-47-47 prime small fft, mind if i ask what the finish on the base of the megahelem is like compared to the TRUE, as i had to lap mine, also fitted a pair of rubber washers to improve the contact.:)

The base was reasonably flat, just very slightly concave in the middle. You can't see it with the naked eye unless you test it with a flat edge. The finish seems to have very small ridges that you can only feel if you drag your nail or a cloth over the base. Similar to a Noctua NH-U12P. I wouldn't think you would need to lap it if you got one, where as with the TRUE, I lapped it before I installed it as the base was poor.
