My wife has just called me to say she's had a bump in the car where she has put a dent in a parked car whilst parking. The other party was away so she left a note to call her (daft or not?)

However, she also said that the part of the car that she hit was parked OVER the white dividing line that separates the bays (marked bays) and has also taken a photo of this particular part of poor parking by the other parties. My question is that what will the Ins companies think of this, will they lump all the liability on to my wife or on the other party because of that bit of parking?

The car was stationary and unoccupied, your wife will get the full blame for it. The white markings in car parks are guidelines only.

Well done to your wife for leaving her details, there are some honest people in the world after all. :)

i think your wife did the right thing, taking a proof shot is a good thing as well.
I had someone who scraped my car in a car park but they just hit and ran, quite cowardly, and was an absolute nightmare to put though my insurance.

My sister's Micra got written off after a car park crash - the guy just drove off. Fortunately a passer-by took his details, and she was able to claim off his insurance. This week she got a letter stating the outcome of the court case, £600 fine and 6 points on the license :D

Well I'm sure giving details was the right thing to do.

WRT the guidelines, then why is it when you park outside (wholly/partially) you are liable for a parking ticket if those lines are only 'guidelines'? (you can probably see where this is leading)

I understand where you are coming from as the normal lane markings are also the case that they are in fact, guidelines.

The street isn't a private car park. Those are parking spaces backed up with the force of the law and council parking attendants.

Parking outwith the lines in a private car park may generate a parking "ticket" but that has little legal force and can be pretty much ignored unlike a council parking ticket.

Private car parks don't fall under the same rules.

Your wife should certainly be commended for her honesty but it's still her fault I'm afraid.

I have had cars bumped a few times, mainly in supermarket car parks (lethal places), and not once has anyone ever left a note. It's pretty shocking walking out of the supermarket towards your car and seeing a huge dent or scratch or something.

These days, as a rule, I always park where there's not many cars and haven't had a bump for a while (touch wood), well in a supermarket car park anyway, the last time something like that happened was when some scroats threw a breeze block through my rear door window for a 'laugh'. The window was no problem to fix but the dents and scratches around the outside of the window are still present.

Wish more people would be honest like your wife.

I was parked in a hospital carpark once, came back to find a huge dent and blue paintwork left on my silver car. It was clear the guy who parked next to me didnt even care to open his door gently so as not to dent my car. Total ignorance, didnt even care to leave me a note and obviously wasnt there when I came back. Our cars were not that close either, he must have just slammed his door fully open.

I dont blame people now for parking in two spots if they have a nice car.

I witnessed some bint drive into a parked car outside, then drive off upset. I took her reg plate anyway and put a note on the guys window on a torn piece of paper - I've had people drive off from denting my car, would hope people would do the same for me.

Couple hours later I saw him come back to his car, grab the note and just throw it without readng it , it promptly blew away. Then as he went to get in his door he must have noticed damage, he was seriously angry, shouting and on the phone pretty quickly. I left him to it, arrogant tit. Who wouldn't read a note on the windscreen?!

And yeah, your Mrs did the right thing, and was in the wrong.

Had my car bumped a while back and no note was left. Ended up paying for the repairs myself as excess was more than cost

Another time I was in the house and a van scrapped down side of my car. I rushed out and got details but I'm pretty sure he would have been off had I not ran out!

His insurance company still tried to take me to court, even though I wasn't even in the car! Suffice to say they backed down once I agreed to go :)

Got to say though, Direct Line were great at sorting everything out. Car was back from repair center within a week (not bad considering it needed a new door, wing mirror, alloy and rear quarter patching up!)

Life in prison for your wife. How did you let her leave the kitchen? She strayed incredibly far! I think you need to get your priorities in order to be honest.

Good on your wife.

I saw someone trying to park thir car t the cinemas once, they just completly did it wrong. cut the whole corner of the car next to it and got stuck. she could not work out how to get out of it and just kept going backwards and forwards into it (austin powers style), eventually forcing her way out in reverse, making the other almost go onto 3 wheels. they jsut drove off - both cars were pretty much wrecked.

I alerted the security guards and told them the details but they did not seem like they were in much of a hurry to do anything.

I'm always aware of people's doors in car parks, and very careful with my own. there are some right idiots out there who don't seem to give a damn.

How do you not notice that cars are parked over the line before going into a space? One of the first things you should do before parking is figure out if there is enough space for your car!

I was eating my dinner sat in tesco's watching some old dear trying to park her car. She first rear ended a parked car then reversed out and scraped the full lenght of the car to her left. I really could not believe what I saw. Like a previous poster I left the details of the car that done and discription of the driver and left my details. I never heard anythins

thumbs up for the wife leaving details...she's just gonna have to take the blame on the chin. Its hardly life or death in the great scheme of things.
