***DiRT™2***

Lets just hope once the market is over saturated with arcadey games people might ask for a bit more..

Well, said, couldn't agree more. As I said above, there's a niche that is begging to be filled with a decent Gran Turismo style game for PC. A lot of people find the more realistic PC sims (think GTR2, LFS) too daunting, but equally a lot of people are unsatisfied by the shallow gameplay and unrealistic handling of the arcade style titles.

There is definitly a gap in the market for a rally simulator. That's all i want now after owning Grid, Dirt, GTR2, rFactor, GT Legends and RBR. If i could buy the latest rally simulator game, i would be well and truly happy!

have to say it looks poor.. they've gone in the wrong direction in feeding the slack jawed americans what they want.. looks way too much motorcross type rally in here, probably due to the endorsement of ken block, some retard who's pretending he's an actual rally driver.. physics engine looks abysmal especially when compared to games like grid.. graphics look unimproved from dirt..

IMO driving games are for driving, no for crashing and breakign stuff.. if you want to break stuff by some cheap crockery from IKEA..
Driving games are also not about graphics.. if you want photorealistic cars go to a car park .. there's like literally dozens of cars to look at.. wow!......

Whats most dissapointing about this game is that its a slap in the face to the memory of Colin Mcrea..

I can understand why people want fun motorcross type games.. but hey codemasters are already releasing fuel.. somethign that ticks all those boxes.. why make another game at the same time that has exactly the same sort of feel to it.. this game has nothign to do with rally or realism.. even the codemasters guy in the video says "its not a realistic game".... I just dont understand this .. theres clearly a market for realistic games .. forza and gran turismo show this, so why can't developers get their heads round this?

Realistic games dont have to be sterile.. i cant speak for grid because i havnt played the full game, but a realistic driving game combined with good graphics and a great physics engine surely would satisfy everyone... Once you've made a game realistic to drive you can easily add in options to tone it down for Americans or the mentally impared..

Firstly, more of a slap in the face than not being able to spell his name right...?

And secondly, if you ever thought that Codemasters were ever going to produce a realist Rally simulator, you have been living in a dream world. All this was ever going to be was a Tony Hawks/SSX/GRID style Motocross game in cars. For those who want something like that its great, for those who dont, how about complaining that there isnt a realistic rally game about rather than complaining that the fun pick up and play arcade game isnt a pure Rally simulator....

yeh i agree that its not meant to be a sim.. i enjoyed Dirt .. however they dont actually seemed to have made any progress over dirt.. the graphics look a bit better, but thats it.. and as you say theres nothing of any depth in there.. thats the problem with an arcadey game, there is no depth, and considering most of the tracks on Dirt were.. well dirty, motorcross type... when dirt 2 is more of the same you're left wandering whats the difference, and left rather bored...

From a developers point of view you really have to ask what the hell have they spent their time on? Dirt 2 looks less realistic than dirt 1 .. am i the only person who find that stupid?.. As i say there are games out there for plug and play, like fuel, and motorstorm, but we need a balance.. plug and play games dont neccesarily get more sales .. gran turismo and forza and priem examples of realistic games that appeal to the masses..

i was hopeing very hard that need for speed shift was going to be a gran turismo like realistic aesthetically pleasing game, btu from all ive seen it wont be any of those things.. Lets just hope once the market is over saturated with arcadey games people might ask for a bit more..

Lol, Dirt tracks being more Dirt...

I mean, come on, pretty much every circuit in the world has been made on a game, so why do people even bother making circuit racing games any more, they all exist already.

Your arguments against this game seem to boil down to "Its not what I want therefore is crap!"...

COLIN McRAETM: DiRTTM 2 GAMES FOR WINDOWS® LIVE EDITION TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF DIRECTX® 11 TECHNOLOGIES
Multi-threading, hardware tessellation and Shader Model 5.0 to turbocharge off-road racer – AMD (NYSE: AMD) powers new levels of visual realism with DirectX 11 software engineering expertise
Monday 6th July/... Codemasters® today announced that the Games For Windows® LIVE edition of Colin McRae: DiRT 2, the thrilling and stylish sequel to the award-winning off-road racer, will support the wealth of new performance enhancing features that will be available in DirectX 11.

With DirectX 11 hardware expected to ship in the second half of 2009, and DirectX 11 coming to home computers with the release of Microsoft Windows 7 on October 22, 2009, Codemasters also announced that the Games For Windows® LIVE edition of Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will benefit from an extended development program to take advantage of DirectX 11 and is now scheduled to be published in December 2009.

“While the console editions of Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will retain their September ship date, we believe that the DirectX 11 feature set is too compelling to ignore, especially considering how much more it can add to the visual experience for PC gamers,” said Bryan Marshall, chief technical officer, Codemasters. “As a leader in digital racing entertainment, we are staying ahead of the pack by immediately taking advantage of key new technologies such as hardware tessellation, multi-threading and Shader Model 5.0 to deliver the most realistic, immersive and exhilarating racing experiences in the business. The fusion of DirectX 11 with Codemasters’ EGO™ Engine will raise the technical bar considerably in the racing genre.”

With the introduction of Microsoft Windows 7, DirectX 11 will be made available both as part of the operating system and as a downloadable update to Windows Vista. Codemasters intends to immediately take advantage of DirectX 11 features that add to the realism of the racing environment. Hardware tessellation will further improve the appearance of water and other surfaces as well as crowd animations.

The shader performance of Shader Model 5.0 (SM 5.0) will aid in creating an even richer 3D experience, enhancing key image quality parameters such as depth of field, ambient occlusion and shadows. These DirectX 11 features, and many others, will add the horsepower needed to improve performance.

“We expect Codemasters’ early move to DirectX 11 to place them in a leadership position in developing the next generation of PC games and simulations,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president, AMD Products Group. “To aid in transitioning to DirectX 11, AMD is providing Codemasters with access to our software engineering expertise in DirectX 11 technologies such as tessellation and shader modelling. DirectX 11 has all of the ingredients needed to take PC gaming to a new level of realism by giving developers tools to effectively utilize the multi-CPU, multi-GPU systems now available to players.”

Why do I get the sudden feeling that we're gonna see vouchers appearing in the boxes of DX11 graphics cards to claim your free copy of Dirt 2 when it finally arrives?..

Here's a quick translation of that press release:

PC version of Dirt2 delayed because of piracy issues. It's just good and smart business to release console versions few months before. It will be a quick and crappy port from consoles that doesn't run very well but we can blame that on Directx 11, which we "officially" support, although graphics cards don't. Because the port is run through an emulator, we will require quad-core, possibly multi-GPU system with at least 4 gigabytes of memory although consoles are limited to 512MB, because our emulator engine isn't really up for the task of running console games on a PC.

We call this emulator EGO(tm) engine for no apparent reason but it really makes us sound like we know our business. Plus, we could easily attach this Directx11 non-sense into this EGO slogan.. thingie.

I mean Dirt2 might be good, we'll see. The original Dirt was decent but the driving engine and physics could have been so much better. Couldn't help but feel it was made only for gamepads thus limiting the real potential of that game. Realistic physics does NOT mean it needs to be harder, just that it feels more natural. I'm all for arcade done right - Flatout being the prime example. Then again, RBR is the best driving game ever released so I guess I'm a bit prejudiced when it comes to big budget arcade racing..

We all know Dx10 is not worth working with and maybe DX11 is worth the effort.

I can see the reasons they are doing this as when the DX11 hardware is available in the autumn, they can work with it and ride the hype of the new tech.

I quite liked Dirt even with its arcade roots. It looks great in Triplehead (still need to get TrackIR to take it to the next level) and if they can get the handling sorted in the sequel, they could be onto a winner.

funny how everyone moans about publishers not implementing new features (DX10, multi-core etc) and how much better games on the pc would be if they actually used the hardware available, then when they do, people moan that it will only run on high end hardware :D

Codies are usually amongst the best at getting decent fps out of their games, you only have to look at how nice Grid looks and how well it runs even on mid-range kit. Looks pretty much like the ego engine has been tweaked a bit and though some might find it a bit overbright, you can't say it ain't pretty.

I know the driving style is not to everyone's taste but Dirt 1 and Grid were both great fun drives and I'm hoping for more of the same with this. Saying that though, it would be nice to have a slightly more realistic Rally sim. I'd like the Mobil 1 Rally Championship to get remade......

Last weekend we gave members of the public the chance to have some hands-on time with the Croatia Rally track on the PC version of the game at the "Festival of Speed" down at Goodwood. We were located on the Colin McRae Vision Stand, and we also took along with us a state of the art D-Box GP-PR-200-RC so that people could really experience what it's like to be a real rally driver.

You can read some of the feedback from people who had a go in this thread.

For people concerned about the handling, the fact that Kris Meeke and Sebastien Loeb set the best times over the course of the w'end by some margin is a pretty good indicator that the handling is spot on this time. We had to practically prise Kris away from the game so that others could have a go, and he said to us that it was the most realistic handling racing game he's ever played :)

Why are they arena/track racing in a RALLY game?

Last I checked rally was held in a forrest, on a mountain or somewhere else ... not on a motocross track.

McRae would turn in his grave :/

I don't think it's ever been claimed that DiRT 2 is strictly a rally game? The game features multiple off-road disciplines including rally which is well catered for in the game.

As for Colin, he participated in many different off-road race event types during his career and not exclusively rally.

One of the press videos mentions that Travis Pastrami (sic) or Ken Block actually met Colin McRae at the X-Games which is an American take on off-road motor sport and usually features arena based events.

Did anyone see some off the moves that he pulled off on Top Gear the other night? Flashy but has some great control.....

I saw McRae at the X-Games ...

But come on people, a McRae game should be a rally game not an X-Games game - if you want to make it about X-Games use Block as your marketing tool.
