Hi guys , i have a PC built with an ASUS P5Q motherboard , Intel Q9550 quad core , Corsair Dominator XMS2 PC2-8500C5 Twinx memory ( 4gb ) and an XFX 4890 1gb ati graphics card .

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to help me with the correct bios settings for this system , it is not going to be overclocked , just a stock setup . There is loads of things that are all set at auto and it worries me :D . The PC has had a few BSODs in the last couple of days , so something is not totally right . Im not overly familiar with ASUS bios features and am just lacking a bit of confidence to set it up 100% correct.

Any and all help greatly appreciated from you guys !

Have you installed the latest BIOS for the MB? If you haven't it would be a good place to start.

Once flashed clear the CMOS and load optimal settings - and see how the system fairs.

Also what are your temps and brand of PSU?

Yeah , latest bios is installed , PSU is a Corsair HX850W (CMPSU-850HXUK) .

Temps are nice and low never been over 40 so far , however system is not long built and has not been used intensively as i stopped trying to use it after the bsods.

Thanks.

I have almost the same set up apart from the memory, I have 8GB of Gskill and a cheapo 450w PSU I had for about 4 years.

I was having a few problems installing vista until I used a disk with SP1 already on it, after that it was fine.

Everything is at stock, including the bios settings, using the latest at the time, this was put together about 2 weeks ago now.

.

Have you run memtest or done any other basic troubleshooting?

Running memtest from a boot disk for a few hours would be a good idea - just to partially rule out the memory as the culprit. Of course if it fails then test one stick at a time - if one or both are consistenly giving out errors then you may have found your fault.

If no one with your MB has popped in by tonight with any BIOS settings i'll d/l your manual and guide you through the 'maual BIOS settings' - but it's pretty straight forward if you have the stats for your memory and CPU. I know it seems daunting but i doubt you would find the process difficult if you referred to the manual while inputting your settings...

Id check the memory settings in the bios, you may have to set the ram voltage and timings manually to the manufacturers rated specs.

Cheers for the offer of help , much appreciated, it turns out to be dodgy memory i think , my memory is 4gb ( 2x 2gb ) , the system had now stopped booting to windows at all , just a bsod after bios .
I took out one of the sticks and away the system went perfect and has been for a few hours now .

I tried putting the stick i removed back in on its own and with the other stick to no avail , so its pretty much certainly a dodgy memory stick , gutted thats the last twice ive bought corsair memory that ive had a bad stick lol :(.

Memtest should confirm this and will aid your rma - or at least give you more confidence. Your problems do match a memory problem (along with others) which is why i suggested memtest - hopefully you'll get the confirmation you need.

I've had 2 sets of Corsair memroy fail on me and have since turned to Kingston - but you seem to have been unlucky like me as Corsair is a reputable make.

Good luck with it.

You could try looking HERE

I have a Rampage Formula and those Asus forums were a great help with Bios tweeks, got my Q9550 running at 3.6Ghz now thanks to their help. ;)
