Hi there,
Just finished my new build, moved it downstairs and immediately Ive run into issues with my Asus 4870x2.

1.) The drivers on the disc are not compatible with win7. Not a problem, download new drivers, install.

2.) The new drivers crash when I run the windows performance test.
Odd.

3.)Bam. Card randomly shuts off while browsing internet. Managed to get it to work after restarting, same thing happens. Cant start it again.

So, now im stuck with my ancient NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GT, and Im not happy.

Any ideas, or should I send it back to OcUK?
Im thinking the card is overheating, because as soon as it dies, I hear the fans go into jet-engine mode. Unfortunately I wasnt looking at the temps when it crashed..
Also, sometimes little red LEDS light up on the top of it after crashing. Sometimes 1, sometimes 3. I dont know the significance of this because ASUS sent me an NVIDIA manual instead of the ATI one.

Ill try the card again later, but until then does anyone have any suggestions?
I dont really want to run a Geforce 7800 on a 4GHz i7 Build..
Thanks, Rob

Are you SURE that you have connected all the necessary power cables? Even if they are, disconnect and reconnect them just in case some of the contacts inside the connectors aren’t connecting properly.

I would also try a different PCIe slot on the motherboard, just in case…

Oh and your PSU is fine :) You should be able to find the correct manual online, have you tried checking the ASUS website? The light combo may be the key to finding out what is going on!

Could be a problem with your PSU. Try disconnecting the card, take it out and put it back in. Also, go into CCC and turn up the fan. It shouldn;t crash when the fan goes into jet engine mode, that is just to quickly cool it down. If all else fails, be safe and send it back. They are reliable cards, but my first one shortly after release broke. My new one has never caused me any trouble though.

As for the light combo, I can't remember what they mean!

Ah, did a bit of googling.
1 light (probably) means overheating.

I think I need to find some drivers that are actually going to be compatible with win7 x64 though.. On the ASUS website they only go up to Vista x64, and im sure they dont work properly (some of the options like 3d settings just refuse to appear, saying 'loading' in CCC)...

Are you able to see the back of the card? there are 5 LEDs situated where the 8pin PCI-E plug goes in...switch on the PC and see what LEDs come on...I had a look at this last night when I was doing my GPU for the watercooling change...

from what I remember the 3rd LED refers to thermal issues and the last two are about the power cables...couldnt tell u what the first 2 were...but do a google search on 4870x2 LEDs and you should be ok :D

I think the lights were first indicating overheating, then started complaining of power problems when i played around with the cables. Im currently downloading drivers from the ATI website, to see if they work at all.

Interesting.
After downloading and installing the new drivers, everything seemed to be fine.
In fact, I was just about to comment here saying that everything was great and that it was running at 41C, when the screen corrupted, I got a BSOD for about half a second, and then everything went black again. The Overheating LED was lit up, and restarting (even 30 minutes later) had no effect.

So now im back on my old card again.

Whats odd is that when restarting much later (when the card was cold), the display didnt even try to show and the single overheating LED immediately came on. Note that the first time it crashed it was only at 41C.

Im out of ideas, anyone else got anything?

Sounds to me like a fault with the card :(

Lame, guess Ill have to go through the whole RMA process.
I think ill get an NVIDIA for my next card...

Though Ill have one more go tomorrow, ill try switching PCI slots, tuning bios and boosting the fan speeds from CCC. Though if it crashes at a random time like before I wont really know if its fixed or not...
