If this is real it's pretty incredible, it's pretty incredible how when it loses it's footing it regains it's balance!

I felt it deserved it's own thread (I hadn't seen it in the youtube thread) :)

There are probably better robots around, but when it slips on the ice, it looks frighteningly organic.

I actually considered it was two humans bent over...

I believe that it is funded as a US military project and while its been dubbed "Big Dog" it was inspired by a mountain mule.

Its purpose is to provide a semi-autonomous stable carrying platform for US soldiers having to transport heavy equipment over rough terrain where normal wheeled vehicles simply cannot go.

And yes (for what it matters, i.e. not very much) this has been posted many times on these forums :)

It's an impressive machine Big Dog, the processing speed and acuracy required to automatically generate compensation within the "legs" actuators is very impressive, as is the speed of response.

I think it looks really sinister. Especially when you see its size in comparison to that guy who kicks it.

Not a patch on BigDog, but still a shame Sony pulled the plug. They were haemorrhaging money though so it had to be done. :(

I agree, it was a devastating blow to the development of 'virtual pets'. Which may sound like a ridiculous concept to many, but for people who live in environments where keeping real animals is an impossibility there is a lot of potential.
