I guess that would depend on how you treat it and what kind of DJ you are. It is not built to take the level of abuse a good scratch mixer would.

I stand by what I said about the build quality and especially the faders though. The only reason it ever did well was because of all the FX and "assists". This mixer certainly helped a lot of DJ's due to all this. Taking all the jazz away leaves you with an extremely poor set of faders though. I'd rather pay for a mixer that has robust faders than cheap faders, BPM counters and flashing lights though. I do understand why it's so popular with certain dj's although the fact remains that the faders and curve are rubbish. ;)

Zabiela's never had any issues. And unless things have changed don't Scratch Perverts still use DJM's?

I know one dj who is well known (canadian based DJ who moved to the UK) renound for his technical abilities both on cdj's, vinyl and on the pioneer mixers (he is a scratch master), hes a massive star in the hard dance scene and he swears by Pioneer mixers.

Now, i'm looking for something really well built

This is what I'm basing my advice on.

I know how popular the DJM800 is, it's 9 times out of 10 the mixer that I've had to unplug wherever I've been. That alone speaks volumes as to its popularity and I fully understand why it is so popular. Yes...the Scratch Perverts did use the turntablist designed DJM series, when they were sponsored by Pioneer. ;) Has to be said that that range is completely different from the DJM800 though.

How you view the DJM800 will to a large extent depend on how you use it and for what. To someone purely mixing records etc. then it is a helpful tool and without thrashing it then it'll last. If, on the other hand, you are a turntablist or likely to be giving the mixer some abuse then it quickly becomes apparent the issues with the build quality. If you like...the increased level of abuse is going to highlight this far quicker than someone just mixing and so is a good indicator when it comes to build quality...not to mention the general feel of it.

I am simply saying that when you compare the build quality of the Pioneer to other mixers in the same price bracket then you'll truely understand just how bad the build quality is in comparison. The faders are simply terrible and there's no getting away from that. It is worth saying that the Technics DMC faders are miles worse though. It's an expensive mixer to keep due to all the replacement faders and the crackle/leak of death.

The OP wanted "something really well built" and that is why I stand by what I said about the Pioneer. The features it offers often win out to most, although that will more be down to what kind of DJ you are, however the build quality is not even in the same league as a Rane TTM57sl or Vestax 07/08 Pro series. I'd rather be paying for quality of components than features. The Rane mixer is what's best suited to the OP due to the combination of quality and the incorporation of SL, which he is planning on getting anyway.

I will reserve judgement on the 909 as I haven't had that one yet. It does look to be a huge improvement on the 800 although I'm in no rush to change.

I guess we'll just have to agree to differ on the Pioneer. I am just offering up what I've found to be the case from personal experience.

OP, Good luck with the quest.

another vote for the djm600 if you cant afford the 800. i used it solidly for about 4 - 5 years and didnt have any problems with it. as mentioned though its not the greatest turntablist mixer out there but then its not aimed at that really. used them in many bars which will have taken a huge amount of abuse and again never had any problems
