Every year these little buggers wreck my lawn - we've now got 5 or 6 big ants nests under the turf.

How do I get rid of them?

I have a dog and a child so don't really want to use chemicals.

Cheers.

back in africa, we used to use small explosive charges on the termite mounds (which were about 2-3 feet high). the same may work in your case!

get some ant powder spray it around the nests , laugh as the worker ants get coated in it and take it into the nest to kill them all.

kettles of boiling water always work well to, my parents house had a problem with ants in the garden

Just burn them, petrol + fire...

And that's a serious suggestion, not the usual kill it with fire or nuke form orbit, but it will leave no chemicals yet annihilate the intruders.

EDIT: Boiling water as above, if you don't like fire.

I remember my Dad had problems with ants in his pub once, crawling along the top of the bar and stuff. He bought one of those cheap gas blowtorches and roasted them all.

I'm an Anteater, with a long nose and some weird toes,
I eat ants with my tongue and nose!
I'm an Anteater, in a big zoo,
I might look strange but I'm nice, don't smell of poo!

You all know it was coming.

Proper Answer is buy some nematodes. These are small wormlike creatures that feed on Ant lavae. Whilst not cheap per se it is an environmentally friendly low impact way to kill ants. Unwins sell them.
