Hey all,

ive just finished a degree in music technology, but recently have found myself doing a lot of web programming/design as well as general repairs, upgrades and general computer management etc etc

i have a few jobs coming in, but how much do i charge without being too harsh on the pricing?

im really confused on how to price things. per hour or?

You charge what they're willing to pay. I know that doesn't help you - but it really depends.

I have a friend that have picked up £500 for doing a one page pizza takeaway site, and another who took £100 for doing an entire CMS system for someone else...

like last night i was working in a hotel that wanted users, and permissions changing on a server... etc etc... and i didnt know how much to charge.

Charge a per the hour feee.

And things like system reinstalls charge liek £50

Thats what i do.

would you mind giving me a quick break down of prices so a list of how much per hour, just an overall look?

Like hardware installs, software installs.... maintenence, management, upgrades etc stuff like that

How long is a piece of string? The price depends on the complexity of the job, the area, the type of business, the price of the competition and what they are willing to pay.

If I worked for myself in IT then my fees would range anywhere from £1000 a day to £25 per hour depending on the job (from VMware consultancy down to installing Windows!)

Not that many jobs would be in the £25 per hour category but you get the picture.

My brother is a freelance graphic designer and web designer and his fees are based on what the client is willing to pay and just like what I said above they range from around £100 for a job to many thousands.

Basic £25ph,

Comp reinstall - Software ect -i'll take the pc home for this. £50-75 depending on software needed.

Wireless setup anywhere from £20 - £40

Cabling depends on needs ect.

I think for freelance web programming and design work you should be looking at around £35-£40ph to be honest. Most small companies charge around £60ph.

I charge £35 per hour, people don't bat an eyelid at that but I have a large customer base. If it's a reinstall, and I can recognise that quickly, I'll do it for a fixed £50.

I find it funny how some people think it is ok to pay a plumber £100 + callout fee for a quick job but then cry if an IT person says £25 an hour.

The same as the ones who dont want to have to pay their Financial Planner or Mortgage Adviser a fee for their services.

@topic: £25 an hour is a bargain. My company (I am doing admin work) charges £14 for 10minutes of my time so yeah lol

The place i work charges £100 per hour for web develpment, thats before discounts for bulk hours ect.

But we have to take into acount all the consultation time and specifications needed for the project, which is why it seems a little high. We dont usally just do flat 1 page sites that do nothing lol.

I used to charge £75 p/h, I quoted this in the hope that they would use someone else as I didn't really want to be working at home after coming home from my main work place - however they paid that amount anyway!

Too many people selling themselves cheap. £25/hour is too cheap. Only the most basic of computer taks should be charged at that price.

(As has been said) go look at what tradesmen charge and I bet not many get close to being as low as £25/hour.
