Got :-
1 in the hall.
1 on the upstairs landing above the stairs, with a light that comes on.
1 CO detector in the kitchen (only place we have a gas appliance).
I have 2. One upstairs and one downstairs. Several years back one of them went off around 0300 waking me up. I will be totally honest and admit I crapped myself, not literally, and it was a few very scary seconds. Fortunately it went off for no apparent reason.
Home Fire Safety Visit should be available from your local Fire Station. Just call them up and they will visit, check your house over for any glaring safety issues and will fit some 10 year smoke alarms. No reason now to bleat about them being too expensive when you can get them for free (well, a cuppa and a biscuit would be nice).
I have three mains operated ones, one on each floor.
Only problem is you can't turn them off when you burn something in the kitchen and they are linked so all three go off. Even killing the mains just flips them onto batteries
I just use my 2 budgies as my smoke and gas alarm. If both of them die in under 10 mins I know something might be wrong and I will ask on yahoo for help
We have many in our student place, however it didn't go off when someone burnt something in the kitchen leaving a thick gray smog in there, which is worrying but not as worrying as the lead architect saying that our foundations aren't that great.
