Maybe I'm being a bit dim, but when I go to change the RAM divider in the BIOS, it comes up with a list of RAM frequencies. Trouble is, they only INCREASE the speed (I'm running 1:1 @ 800MHz atm).

My question: Can I set this to LOWER the speed of my RAM? This is with the intention of increasing the FSB to get a higher CPU clock.

Have a look at the FSB-NB strap setting, depending on what you have this set to will open up more ram speed options.

Hi death_looms,

The memory cannot run any slower than the FSB on a modern Intel® LGA775 chipset i.e if the FSB set equals 400MHz then thats the slowest speed the memory can run (DDR2-800).

Sounds like you are running the memory 1:1 sync right now so thats not a bad place to be when working out your overclock but once you find the sweetspot of your CPU and FSB it may well be you are able to take the RAM from 1:1 sync and use an upwards memory multiplier to crank a little bit more speed from your sticks! :)

Intel® LGA775 platform responds well to extra bandwidth and reduced latency which comes from fast memory!

Hi big wayne, ive been clocking my q9550 a bit further, now at 3.8ghz (8x450) ive noticed my performance level in memset has jumped from 10 to 13, at 3.6ghz (8x425) on 333mhz fsb=nb strap it was at 10, since i upped the fsb its dropped to 13, can i set it to 10 again via memset to test the memory settings, i had a bit of trouble stabilising the rig with prime blend at 3.6ghz, i discovered a setting called "cpu margin enhancement" changing this from optimized to performance lead to blend stability.

Hi Setter,

I believe Performance Level (tRD) gets slackened when the memory is running 1:1 sync, seems to default to tRD/13 but in most cases you can lower this too tRD/10. When the Memory is set to run faster than 1:1 using an upwards divider the tRD gets tightened.

I've not used that cpu margin enhancement setting yet so I will be sure to give it a try, you know how it goes with these P5Q BIOS options, there are so many it takes a while to get through the lot of them! :D

Yep tell me about it lol, i was geting freezes in prime blend, NB and VTT at 1.14, pll at 1.54, after 3 hours, i uped the VTT and NB to 1.26, blend failed after 20 mins, done some reading on xs and the asus forums, discovered the cpu margin enhancement issue, switched it to performance from default optimized, ran blend for 5 hours without issue, last night i upped the fsb to 450mhz, same VTT and NB settings (1.26), 1.21875 vcore in bios, 1.200 windows idle and 1.26 prime load. im currently running my ram 1:1 @901 mhz, but i read on xs, if i want to go higher on fsb, get away from 1:1 ratio.
