Hey folks was just wondering if its possible to use an external hard drive with the xbox and save game profiles and game saves? just asking as i can get my friends arcade xbox which doesnt have the official hard drive, dont want to go buy an official 60gb one as i have a 150gb western digital lying around the house, cheers for any info :)

no no prevent from saving to elsewhere

Because it doesn't recognise a USB hard drive as an option to save files to, simple as that. You can't save music or video to it either. The 360 simply recognises the files already on there and lets you play them.

Correct, so you won't be able to store files > 4GB on it.
You also need to use some third party software to format a drive greater than 32GB as Microsoft don't seem to be able manage it.

I think I used this one but it's been a while so I'm not sure and you'll have to use it at your own risk. You'll need to back up anything first any way.

So this software will allow me to use a non xbox hard drive as my main source for saves and 360 game installs to run from? I would be using my WD Drive.......

No, no legit software will allow you to do that. He has linked to some FAT32 formatting tool, which is "needed" to format external drives like your 150GB as Windows built in utility will not let you format drives over 32GB.

You will need to buy the official 20/60/120 drive to do what you want.

Thanks for clearing that up for me m8, i suppose its just another money spinner from MS eh but needs must so al try pick up a cheap 120GB drive, Thanks again ;)

You can get a new 120gb HD fpr £69.99 if you look around.

It also comes with the transfer cable, which can be sold on ebay for £25 (inc postage) once you have used it. People are desperate for them and much prefer the official one including the disc and manual, as opposed to some dodgy copy from china that doesn't come with software.

Then...IF you have a 20GB, you can also ebay that for about £15. A highstreet exchange place will also give you £12 cash or £16 trade.

So, 120GB can be done on the cheap if you are clever about it.

I've seen preowned 120gb 360 drives for £48. That's the best deal I've seen from a store.

Don't always come with the transfer cable though.

If you do the math from my above post, you'll see that if you can be bothered to sell the old stuff, it is by far the cheapest way of upgrading to a 120.

My transfer cable sold in less than a day on the bay. Should have no problem getting rid quickly and easily.

Oh and £69.99 for a new 120 ain't as nowhere near as bad as the highstreet anyway.
