hi i currently have 2 4890s which arent performing as well as i hoped for.
im not sure if im expecting to too much as i know some games dont scale well when using crossfire or if the games arent that well optimized for crossfire.
also after adding a second 4890 the top card get very hot and i have to always put the fan upto 60% which is very loud.

if i buy a GTX 295 will i have equal performance to what i already have and will i get the full 1792MB of vram or is this halved as its 2 cards made into one.
 
not sure if it will equal those 2 cards but its an amazing card and the best around, other than that silly priced
Mars one which no one is gonna pay 1000+ for.
 
I wouldn't hold much by that benchmark... theres an obvious ATI bias...

If the ATI card gets even a slight increase they make a big deal about it, if the 295 gets a slight increase they go on about how the cards are "sitting at the same speed", etc.
 
i have a gtx295 and im very happy with mine , does sound a bit loud when under stress but you have to expect that if you want best performance / graphics ....
all full on arma 2 and still plays really smooth :)
 
If you use a GTX295, you will have less vRAM (both physical and useable) than you have now.

It's a pointless "upgrade" which won't really be an upgrade. And is rendered foolish by DX11 cards being out pretty soon.

For basically the same performance, you are outlaying your hard earned cash, for a card which will soon be rendered obsolete by the release of DX11 and DX11 cards.
 
my original question was im not getting the performance i expected with 2 4890s would a GTX 295 still give the same performance that 2 4890s are supposed to be?
will i be limited to just 898mb Vram.
ive read many things about ppl having issues with ati crossfire but never heard any bad things about ppl using a GTX 295.
im not trying to debate which cards are better by benchmarks be better from hearing it from the horses mouth as to speak meaning ppl on these forums.
as for DX11 i remember when DX10 cards were released and no games were avaliable for a long time and even now DX10 games are few and not that much different from DX9 titles in terms of difference in graphics.

I would think the 4890's will be faster as the 295 is two gtx260's.

DX10 was a balls up, we are jumping from DX9 to DX11.

The first round of DX11 cards will probably be crap as usual.

from what ive researched online a GTX 295 is 2 GTX 275s sandwhich together but 2 sli GTX 275s are faster as you are using 2 pci X16 lanes
so im thinking of sli GTX 275s now but im not sure
 
Yeah the GTX 295 is two 275's sandwhiched together. Ideally you'd be better off buying two seperate 275 graphics cards and running them in SLI as opposed to a 295 because they wont run as hot (more space between the cards,) and you have better potential for an OC.

I'm a massive fan of ATI but I wouldn't buy a 4890. The reference design doesn't deliver enough voltage to the card and there is a benchmarking tool that will bring the card crashing to a halt. Plus my 4870 will OC to the stock values of a 4890 making the 4890 a bit of a rip off for the extra cash. If I were to buy a 4890, I'd get either the Power Color PCS or XFX 1ghz versions though.

If you are sensible I'd just wait and see what the next round of cards bring and upgrade then. Who knows you might be able to pick up a GTX 295 from the clearance part of the site if the new cards are too expensive. If money is no object and you aren't sensible get two of the Mars GTX295's. They aren't a reference design, and instead of using two 275 GTX GPU's on a card they use two 285 GTX's. So quad SLI with those bad boys is like having four 285 GTX's in your rigs. I can't see the drivers being greatly optimized for games because this is a design from Asus not Nvidia, but you are pretty sure they will be for benchmarks because Asus will definately want to take the performance crown. So for the ultimate e-peen get a pair of mars cards.

Alternatively if it is just a case of the cards being too loud have you considered watercooling at all?

Thanks for a interesting post i think i will leave alone the mars GTX 295 for when i win the lottery;).
the more i read about GTX 275 sli, it appeals more than a GTX 295 as its about £50 cheaper and it seems i will have 10 -15% more performance.
ill sleep on it i think
 
Avoid the 295 at all costs, both the 4890 setup and the GTX275 dual GPU setup is cheaper and faster, plus obviously barring noise issues two heatsinks will cool better than one. I'd tend towards ATI, simply because models that are guaranteed to clock very highly (the XFX XT model for example) are quite cheap at the moment and will give a decent performance boost.

I would think the importance is on you trying to assess why you think your cards aren't working as well as you'd hoped.

If they are working as they should and you're just disappointed by the performance (I Don't know how) then a GTX295 is going to leave you even more disappointed.

It's not really a sensible idea to ditch something when you can't get it working assuming an alternative brand solution will fix your problems.

What is the actual reason why you're disappointed with the performance?

Crossfire scales extremely well in a lot of games. It's getting increasingly common to see performance improvements of 100% over a single card.

I would hope the 295 is top quality considering how far down you have to bend over to acquire one.

Here's a little tip, it's not wise to label some one a fanboy while going on like a fanboy yourself.

It's okay to say the 295 is overpriced without being a fanboy.

Oh noes! Some one prefers Asda Smartprice 'Pot Noodles' over the Potnoodle brand! They must be an ASDA FANBOY! GET HIM!
