E46 M3 CSL Residuals

Obviously the 330d will be smelly and sound like a Ice cream van :D but are there any other things i should be aware of?

smelly? mine only smells when an injector has gone..... which leads me to the next point..

turbo
6 injectors that will all go once one has (costly)
lower fuel pump

all the above are common problem points :]

Are the injectors something that fail after a certain time? Worth checking to see if ones i look at have been replaced, thanks

i think 120k is a typical sort of mileage, my first one went about 5k ago, 2nd one this week.
easy and cheap to sort if you have the tools and time (and have some way of knowing which injector to change), costly if not.

Care to give a little more insight on that Morba, its about the only thing that worries me about my 330d.

How much are the injectors separately?

you can buy refurbed ones for about £200 each, on ebay they are cheaper but not from the most reliable sources (mine cost £157 on ebay and is ok atm).
New can cost £300.

I was quoted something around £800 for supply and fitting by BMW

Ive been thinking about it and unless I track it, how much more is the CSL going to offer me over a standard M3 for road use? Ive just always lusted after one but not sure the 10k premium is justifiable.

Same here, I can't help thinking the £10k premium would be better spent on an e39 M5 to complement a std e46 M3 rather than have a CSL.

Or, spend the premium on a supercharger kit......

Drive them both and you'll see how much more it offers, except in the 'goodies' dept - you may not even get a Radio/CD, but once you've heard the engine you'll understand why that option is unnecessary :D

I went to a BMW rolling road day not so long ago, and the noise the CSL made just on the dyno was enough to get me hooked

I am back in the UK in August for a holiday, so will be test driving a few cars then, and once Im back at the end of the year I will have hopefully made more of a decision. I have a feeling that if I drive a CSL I am going to want one no matter what.

They sound like a DTM car from the 90's when at full chat coming towards you a make a truly epic induction noise....and a wasp in a jar once they've gone past.

Do you guys know if you can fit the Alpha-N induction kit to the standard e46 easily?

Housey - I got my M3 :D. Went for SMG in the end. Loaded with kit and has the AC Schnitzer exhaust which I believe was a factory fitted option. Sounds immense!

Well done Nick, I am sure you'll enjoy the M3 as they really are a great road car and brilliant value at the moment too. You need to get over to MTorque and learn all about their foibles and stuff now if you haven't done so already. I suspect you're now starting to see the difference between a forced induction diesel with power and a high strung high revving NA engine with a sharp throttle and soundtrack. ;)

My (very limited) understanding is no, it can't easily be done. I also believe it's not actually Alpha-N - going from some deep technical discussions I've read - but fully understanding those technical things is way outside the capabilities of my peanut of a brain.
