Fair cop, self defence is one thing... Like I say, after the proverbial bugs are gone, we'd most likely keep kicking chunks out each other anyway. And after a fight with another species, assuming we win, we'll most likely have developed even more effective ways to wipe each other out too.

Expansion into space means colonisation, and colonies do not like to be under the control of a foreign power for very long. if they have colonized worlds it's more than likely those worlds would eventually rebel/try for independence which never ends peacefully.


Just because they're more advanced doesn't mean they wont still have war and fighting, it just means they'll do it on a larger scale.

I don't think they wont have 'war', they most likely wont be effecting it upon each other, is all. If they haven't gotten around to wiping us out, there must be a reason, and given that they have the technological prowess to get from wherever they come from to us I'd make the assumption they had the tech to wipe us out in seconds.

Well that's the definition of the human race. Quick fix after quick fix. We never learn anything from our history and we never change our ways. Might as well blow stuff up in the meantime though. ;)
 
If an Alien species has the technology to travel between the stars they must be well ahead of us possibly millions, even billions of years, with the amount of energy needed to travel such distances our tiny planet would mean little to them, they would have access to vast amounts of energy beyond our comprehension. Unless there homicidal maniacs why would they want to destroy us? Our little planet would offer nothing to them. Just because where violent doesn't mean the rest of the Universe is. Evolution on other Worlds would be very different to ours.

Get rid of religion and we'd have a damn sight better chance than with it.

At the risk of being pedantic, mutation is random, selection is not. There is nothing random about our intelligence.

You're slipping, that was a whole two days on an evolution point and you hadn't corrected it. Like a moth to a flame... :p

I think there is something to be said for the idea that the most telling argument for intelligent life outside of Earth is that they haven't tried to contact us.

In his famous lecture on Life in the Universe, Stephen Hawking asks: "What are the chances that we will encounter some alien form of life, as we explore the galaxy?"

If the argument about the time scale for the appearance of life on Earth is correct, Hawking says "there ought to be many other stars, whose planets have life on them. Some of these stellar systems could have formed 5 billion years before the Earth. So why is the galaxy not crawling with self-designing mechanical or biological life forms?"

Why hasn't the Earth been visited, and even colonized? Hawking asks. "I discount suggestions that UFO's contain beings from outer space. I think any visits by aliens, would be much more obvious, and probably also, much more unpleasant."

Why do you hate it?
 
It's generally quite inaccurate, and one of the bloggers, Luke McKinney, is a really bad writer as well as really poor at reporting any actual facts. That coupled with his constant digs at religion in certain news posts which have nothing to do with religion, make me hate it even more.
 
I only read Hawking/NASA stuff on there really. Is there any other similar blogs that are better for daily intake of space news? APOD is already on my iGoogle but that's photos only :p
