Basically as per title really.

I am considering a major rebuild for my gaming pc (the pc in my sig) and was thinking about going for an AMD 955 based system, as much as i'd like an i7 set up its just a bit too much.

From reviews i have found they only seem to compare it to stock core2 quads which it obviously out performs, some times by quite a margin, other times not such a good margin and encoding the intel chips always do better, but then they always have done.

From searching around the net most of the 955's seem to clock to around 3.7Ghz assuming i can achieve this, or higher, i would be reasonably happy BUT would it be a worth while upgrade?

I know i could go for a dual core and try to "unlock" the extra cores but there is no guarentee this would work, if i was looking for a dual core set up i would get one and try this for a free upgrade but i want 4 cores so don't want to risk throwing money away on a "dud".

As far as jumping off the sinking 775 ship and getting some good money for it i'd go for it. Pretty sure you wouldn't see a massive improvement though.

to note, amd is meant to be releasing a new chip, the 965be soon (mid aug afaik).

also there is i5 to consider?

High layout for small gain tbh, wait for new amd/intel chips out soonish and see what they do/cost.

yeah agree wait for the AMD 965 and snag a 955 at a bargin price

if the AMD 965 is 200 quid, as per the rumours...i'd go for this, this price might drop by Xmas when the 4.8GHz version is due out

oh hell.......just wait till Xmas and get the 4.8, it's only a few months away :D:D

4.8Ghz chip by Xmas. What drugs have you been taking?

I QUOTE:-

``At the end of Nov beginning Dec 2010, with new steps there will be a 4.8 Ghz FX 120W variant followed by 4.9 Ghz FX 130W variant before Christmas due to the first signs of economic recover... those entrances will reposition all the lines below, and the official presentation of the Buldozzer will happen, schedule to sort out 2 months later in 2011.``

ok i meant 2010

but i could be wrong

Quote from where. Provide links.

EDIT - That's a full year and a half away... 2010...

Yeah i was thinking sell my current set up whilst it is still worth a few bob to fund the upgrade, if i am lucky i might get £150ish or best part of that so the upgrade would cost around £200. With a bit of luck AM3 will be around for 2-3 years so should get some more upgrades out of it before completely rebuilding again.

Not sure about i5 tbh, seems to me to be a bit of a no mans land, aimed more for oem builders i think rather than "enthusiasts".

It's a looser, your basically throwing away £200 for no real world benefit! :(

Don't be suckered in by Perceived Obsolescence, Intel® Core™ 2 is a superb platform to own and I'm sure it blazes through all your tasks with ease . . . so why on earth would you swap that out for AM3?

Your LGA775 kit will be worth good money for years to come and its not suddenly gonna become worthless heh! :p

Obviously do what you feel is best but I think you are listening to a lot of Marketing hyperbole trying to brainwash you into thinking your beatiful computer is actually rubbish ;)

There is only two good reasons for thinking of upgrading, the first is your computer is struggling with the work and games you through at it, the second reason is simple you are bored with your toys and fancy something new!

If i am honest its more the second of the 2, i have had the current set up (mobo / cpu) for well over a year now and have the hankering for a change.

The are a couple of games i have tried where it sort of struggles, and by that i mean i can't run them at max eye candy with out noticable slow down, monitor res is 1920x1200, but they are very few and far between, and i would guess its more than likely my gfx card causing that.

it will lose any real value in a year or so when the new cores come out. :p
I routinely see nVidia Socket A/462 boards and nVidia Socket 939 board selling for about £60 inc at auction so this whole ditch it while it worth something debate seems mOOt :)

If rxmac wants to swap out a perfectly good LGA775 system for a newer AMD AM3 system thats entirely his prerogative, and by the sounds of it he is doing it because he is bored with what he has and maybe keen to play around with some new kit, perfectly reasonable for those reasons although it has nothing to do with performance or speed and the fact that a few hundred pounds £££ is being blown does make me wonder why we do these things that make not much sense heh! :D

I've never had the pleasure of owning a card as powerful as an nVidia GTX260 but I guess you must be really hardcore if that isn't enough for you. I also game at 1920x1200 (have done for several years) and like my games to look good and play smooth but I don't subscribe to this "Max, Max max" school of thought i.e turn down AA a bit and make a few tweaks and happy days.

If anything it sounds like you money should be going on a new GPU although as already mentioned a GTX260 is a mean card, maybe you need a new hobby!

I think the reason socket a stuff fetches such a good price at auction is its age, it might be some time before 775 stuff starts to increase in value like that after it bottoms out.

Yeah i think you hit the nail on the head i think i am just getting bored with my set up and want to try something new, its just a shame Intel have had it so good for so long as it would make these kinds of decisions so much easier if Intel / AMD swapped the performance crowns a bit more often.

As for getting another hobby, i tried that and having a modified RX7 (hence the forum name) it gets a whole lot more expensive when you get bored and fancy a change believe me :p

I can relate to that, but its worth a few moments of reflection to consider things. Your computer is meant to be a tool that enables you to perform many amazing things, explore virtual worlds, multimedia creation and editing, finding a cure for cancer, design a building, the list goes on and on.

However it seems a few people forget about this and literally just concern themselves with hardware for hardwares sake, you have an amazing quad core computer with a very nice GPU but yet somehow your still left wanting?

Not that you need the extra power but have you considered overclocking your chip some more? 3.3GHz is a nice speed but surely a natural born tweaker is left wanting more! . . . are you capable of getting that chip to 3600MHz or more?

There must be something else you can blow £200 on that will be meaningful? or you a rich playboy who has everything and just is curious to see what the newer AMD AM3 systems are like heh!
